BTW, I didn't know that you lived there, you obviously have a better understanding of what's going on there than me.
However, from an objective viewpoint of not being from there, I still think that this whole thing seemed completely counter-productive to having any real dialogue and compromise judging by the multitude of people looking for confrontation in that footage.

find a new right wing boogyman for your entertainment
I know I've mentioned before that I'm more right-leaning than pretty much everybody on this site (comes with the midwestern territory and upbringing) but I'm far from some bait-taking, MAGA hat-wearing, boob. I don't find this entertaining at all. I find it horrifying and indicative of a country that's lost it's identity in a haze of indeterminable ideology aggrandizement and inflated senses of justice from overzealous policeman and citizens alike. I agree that policing as a practice needs to be reformed in a way that makes sense both on a community-driven and national scale to ensure that justice is able to be carried out in the way that it's intended. We still have a long way to go in terms of what that actually means and looks like. They've heard what people have to say, and now they need the time, planning, and efforts of people from all municipal services to work together in a way that creates permanent, not temporary solutions. It's time to stop the protesting and begin the rebuilding.
oh I didnt mean to suggest anything about your own political leanings with that comment. its just that this has been used as a right wing boogeyman, and plenty of dumbfucks on the left cheered it on and treated it as entertainment for that reason, which I see as no different than fox news' approach to it. the fascination with the novelty of this boondoggle has no boundaries in political affiliation, and that's one of the reasons I thought it was an absolutely terrible decision to set up. I really wish they hadn't created this distraction about "exiting the united states". but I still feel compelled to argue against the false narratives that were made available by this self inflicted vulnerability, and I hope that when this is dismantled it does not happen in a cloud of tear gas or barrage of clubbings from the police, however naive that hope may be.
I disagree that protests are no longer needed, though. there needs to be pressure or we'll just see toothless reforms that result in more money going to police while they remain highly militarized, using chemical weapons and shit like LRADs that have the potential to deafen people, while enjoying the protection of qualified immunity from any accountability for their gross abuses of power.
I can understand that sentiment. I imagine that "non-lethal" alternatives will probably be under more scrutiny than ever as they have never been used on this massive of a scale before.
Those SDS protests in response to police brutality and vietnam lasted three years and you think we should call this good after less than six months? What?
What do you think of this article about politics and music? Insightful or half-baked?
Seems like a lot of grasping/slippery slope logic/not whole truths are being said.
I think ever since Mic Jagger (possibly even sooner), rock has always had a feminine side vs a "cock rock" side, and usually the cock-rock side tended to be on the right side of the political spectrum and those that were more feminine were more times than not on the left.
Fairly creative piece and the prose is solid, but idk if the end result is really anything solid or terribly insightful.
