To be honest I had the same issue.
What it is is that discord doesn't make you create an account to use its services.
So to avoid the confusion, go to discord's website directly (instead of links inviting you to join a server), then create an account. Then join the discord server.
When I tried it any other way I was confused if I was using my actual account or a guest account.

You could download the software instead of using the browser version for more cohesion, as well. In fact the discord program is better in many other ways.
