Dagara - Gyil Music Of Ghana's Upper We...e Of Lawra

This is now #1 in my 2021 chart, topping Parrenin. Mindblowing stuff from Ghana on the gyil, an instrument I'd never heard about before. Trancey af. Hayden, you might like this, and I can imagine a bunch of BEAers might as well (Repo ?)

That's quite the instrument to have Razz (sold at some point or not). Not something you come across every day.

Should add that there's a 2004 balafon record from Kélétigui Diabaté that sits on my Africa chart. Sandiya. I can't think of any reason not to give it a rec if you enjoyed Dagara. I imagine they'll be somewhat similar. (Once again, will give it a listen in a sec Anxious).

for sure. i found it at a fair trade store a block away from a jewelry store i worked at in college. i recorded a little loop on it before selling it off, but it's nothing to write home about. if i ever find myself in that part of the world, i'm going to make sure and buy a couple and maybe try to find someone who can show me the ropes.

On the chart it goes.

Definitely a bit dizzying (in a good way). Whole bunch of sounds/rhythms/melodies laying overtop eachother considering it's one instrument. Wonder how many mics they had on it. Gave it a listen with headphones and it almost sounded like it was being played in front of me.

Well jeez, that's not too shabby. Wish you did a bit more. Had a decent sound to it. Hoping you pick another one up one day Smile. I'm sure there would be a whole handful of instruments I'd want to shop around for in west Africa, but I truly fear customs and the handling there of. Think I'd be happy picking up something like a shekere in the west and a mbira in the east. If I ever hop on over to India, I think I might make the exception in grabbing a (decent) sitar though (and... maybe a lesson or two Anxious ... especially considering I'd probably never be able to wrap my head around notation which reads out like 'S g M P D G N d').

Blue Weekend by Wolf Alice

Best album of the week. Incredible follow-up to Visions of a Life. The album is a beautiful and anguished listen that dives into concept/narrative territory, following the arc of Rowsell's relationship/breakup/self-discovery.
