Quite possibly the best album they've ever done. My favourite Bad Seeds album changes every few weeks, but Tender Prey has the best balance between the noisier, more experimental and crazy 80s work and the balladry, singer/songwriter and alt rock chops of Nick's 90s songwriting. I guess it's been my favourite Nick Cave album for the longest time, although it's not my top choice currently.

Great write-up. I basically agree, although it's difficult to pick an absolute top album because they have so many great ones. Your statement about the balance of the record is correct, though (Let Love In also has a pretty good balance, as well). Awesome, awesome record and the one that got me fully on board with Nick's genius!

The Bad Seeds have so many good albums, and I agree that this blends some of the best elements of 80s and 90s Nick Cave. "The Mercy Seat" is one of my favorite songs of theirs, just incredible from start to finish.

I know their recent stuff is incredibly acclaimed as well, but starting with Push the Sky Away, each subsequent Bad Seeds album started to appeal to me less and less (though Carnage this year I think combines some of the best minimalist/ambient stuff from the 2010s with his punkier stuff from the 90s/00s). I think Tender Prey launched the band into the 90s and started a string of incredible albums that really hasn't stopped yet. Every single album they've done since then has knocked it out of the park (with the possible exception of Nocturama which I haven't heard yet).

This is easily a top 3 Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds album for me.

I only heard this album the one time but it impressed me.
real moody and mysterious
the mercy seat I knew and that has to be one of their greatest songs
but deanna is very good too
must listen to it again!
