That's Glenn Mercer, generally considered the bandleader. The photo was taken before he had all the cosmetic surgery.
Meanwhile, the first guy on the left is Anton Fier, who went on to form the Golden Palominos... whom I actually sort of liked better, for the most part? Hard to say.
I do own this record on vinyl and it's in my MP3 collection too, but I agree that it's pretty much "forgotten" at this point. Music critics mostly loved them, and people in New York probably remember them fondly, assuming they were alive and clubbing at the time. But outside of the post-Velvets NYC scene I don't think they had much of an impact with fans.
