Not my favourite Bowie album by any means, but I still think it's somewhat underrated among his 70s work. The run from Sweet Thing through Rebel Rebel inclusive, is absolutely fantastic and some of his most enthralling work. There's some other great tracks as well. I don't think it holds together as well as his best albums of the era - Hunky Dory, Ziggy, Station to Station, Low etc - or even something like Aladdin Sane (another somewhat underrated Bowie record). But it's better than Young Americans, which apart from the title track and Fame is a bit disappointing.

Maybe his most straightforward “rock” album, but also his grimiest, gnarliest record, probably too much so to be lumped in with other so-called glam rock artists, who were by and large much more polished and deliberately sweet (no pun intended). I’m actually a big, big fan of this album - it gets overlooked (in as much as any Bowie album from this era can be considered as such), and it’s got a driving energy to it that makes it sort of unique in his catalogue. Definitely top ten Bowie, for me.

You're right, that's an atrocity.

More people should take Dylan's philosophy for granted; just take a picture, put your name and title on, and you're done.

It's been on my mind to revisit lately. For one thing, the title song kept getting mentioned in Ted Lasso, which did remind me that this whole thing is pretty great. My previous thoughts were that the first side is brilliant top tier Bowie and that the second side (which I believe is leftovers from the abandoned 1984 musical) was a bit of a let down, at least in comparison. Though I know a lot of people seem to love the second side. Mebbe it just wasn't what I expected after the first side of raunchy Stonesy glam rock.

Sidebar: I'm talk about sides as though I have the vinyl or something. I blatantly don't. There's just an obvious distinction on this album between the material on what would be the original two sides. Now I think about it, I expect the album would make more sense in its vinyl form.

It speaks volumes about the strenght of Bowie's 70's output that this is considered one of the weaker releases from that period. It is also a bit underrated since it's probably just little bit below his best albums from this period, and it's much better than Young Americans, while probably on par with Lodger and even Heroes.

The tittle track is the best Stones song they never wrote, it's just so unusaly dirty and sleazy for Bowie but it works wonders. I quite like the theatrical tracks to, from Sweet Thing on side A all the way to the most of the tracks on side B.

Skinny said it's definitelya top 10 Bowie album, and I think it would also be in the lower regions of his top 10 for me. I often forget how good it is, until I play it and then I'm always blown away. Same as today,

Probably my favorite Bowie album, though it's hard to chose. He certainly had some good ones.
