I disagree but I kind of understand where you're coming from. One can hear the carefree joyfulness slowly diminishing album after album. Also more cheesy-sounding "universally appealing" songs that cash in on his worldwide superstar status. Bad and Dangerous can get pretty annoying in this regard. But History always sounded genuine to me. At least as genuine as Michael Jackson ever got. He felt all sorts of fucked up about the pedophilia allegations and it shows. |
I like HIStory but as an album, it falls flat. Of course post Off The Wall he had a lot of styles mixed on one album but to me HIStory is the one where it feels forced. I have no idea why he had to work with Janet's producers out of all people, David Foster is also a poor choice and especially Smile adds nothing to the album. I don't mind Come Together but why did it have to be recycled here when he had several Dangerous leftovers instead (as seen on Blood On The Dance Floor)?
You Are Not Alone is not a bad song either but it could have been done by "anyone" at the time and One Sweet Day wiped the floor with it soon after. Earth Song is somewhat interesting but I believe it was meant to have a simple chorus like that to make sure it's a hit in non-English territories (which worked) so most of the album is very calculated...
They Don't Care About Us & Stranger In Moscow are among his best and I agree they are very genuine, moreso than Heal The World, Keep The Faith or Gone Too Soon! This Time Around is also a great, underrated song, wish he'd used Dallas Austin more instead of the others on the album.

It's alright my friend. The MJ pedophilia thing is a really touchy subject anyway. I myself basically stopped listening to his music back in early 2000's when the second series of child molestation trials began. At that point I was convinced he was a child molester. I didn't like to listen to his music anymore. It was only recently that I started seriously doubting the whole thing and listening to his music again. Anyway, Happy New Year!
