My relationship with this album has had and interesting trajectory, not similar to many other albums. But I somehow have the feeling other people might share this experiene.
Having heard that this is the legendary double album by the great Stones, I went into this album with somewhat high expectations because of this reputation the album had. And I was sooo underwhelmed. Most of the songs left little to no impression, the album seemed long and there was no songs that felt like highlights other than the wonderful Shine A Light I knew from before.

However, over time this album has slowely, but surely creeped in into my very favourites. After a few more listens, everything just clicked, I experienced the album as a whole and then almost every song was a highlight. Every song was so rich and full of life, raw and powerful, and that's actually the spirit of the whole album. This album, more than possibly any other album in the world, has personality and character.

I think I'm still in the zone of your first description, Exile hasn't quite "clicked" yet. I love a handful of other Stones albums and mostly prefer their late 60s output. Exile is good, but underwhelming compared to the other Stones' greats IMO

that's interesting, cos apart from the opening track, and a few other tracks, I felt underwhelmed when I first heard this album. It has such a giant reputation and on first listen I was disappointed.

But I persevered with it, and heard a couple of tracks in some movies and liked them. And after listening to it a good few times I grew to love it.

I agree it is more an album experience rather than a series of hit songs.

Now I own it on vinyl and play it quite often

I have experienced a few turn-arounds on albums like this.
