WTF! Black Metal actually began in 1969 with this ...

Link

I mean it's not Bathory. But pretty fucking close. FActor in that it's 1969, and it's like Twisted Evil !!!

Someone tell me that that riff & tone is NOT Black Metal.

Flowers Of Romance by Public Image Ltd.

weirdly one of my faves and one of the most influential albums of my "childhood" (pre-like, 16)

---------------

Pirates by Rickie Lee Jones

this is great and better than her more famous debut.

-------------------

As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Fall... Lyle Mays

heard this once and I remember really really liking it but never returned.

----------

Homosapien by Pete Shelley

pete shelley released his best solo work in 1981 with Homosapien. The title track is a total master work.

---------------

and outside of that, like the top 5 albums of 1981 are ones you probably have heard of by bands like The Cure and The Gun Club, X, Black Flag and This Heat and King Crimson and Brian Eno and David Byrne, etc etc... I'm sure you'll consider them. But yeah of those Fire of Love shouldn't be overlooked. (Fire of Love by The Gun Club, that is... a great proto-pixies, proto-white stripes, heroin-addled filthy blues punk classic is that album)

Dare by The Human League

I need organization. Without it my life falls into chaos. a messy abode. BUT, give me a model. A template. Give me some rules. Give me a fricken’ map. And I. am. set.

Human League’s Dare knows & respects my boundaries. My limitations. It’s an English Synth Pop band understanding my need for a GPS system installed right into my friken steering wheel. Right there where I can see it without taking my eyes off the road. Telling me to go East. Right now! But politely, mind you. Um.... It's an exit one too early. No matter. that's EVEN better honestly. As I get to explore a few shops. Grab a tea or coffee. And get back on the road. "And turn off the lights."

'81:4 Turning In Circles

Point Of Entry by Judas Priest

I'm turning in circles, so stay away
We've all got somethin' wrong to say
– Turning Circles

I have to admit something. I LOVE this album. BUT, “and there’s always a but”, it is NOT a great Judas Priest album. Just a very good one. It’s a bit flat. Some of the middle sections of songs “don’t go” anywhere. Just “turning in circles.” They tried to go back and combine some of their classical/gothic period elements with a more melodic, streamlined radio friendly sound, BUT (see above) it just didn’t work for the majority of their fan base, and it didn’t attract new fans either, who in 1981 frankly, had better choices for AOR Metal in the likes of Ozzy, AC/DC & Van Halen.

BUT (see above), if you worship at the altar of Priest (like I do!) there is A TON of mileage you can get from this album!

Is it The Scene (year, city, genre) OR Is it the Band?!?!

Well, duh, it's a bit of both. Of course. BUT!!! After observing Mercury's fantastic work on his thread, I've come to realize that the band is more important!!! I'm a genre guy. I'm a scene guy. BUT, my approach is wrong. My approach works for LIVE music. But NOT music history. The bands are more important than the genres or scenes. Some bands are just special. Making the rest of the bands in any particular scene seem generic. The bands with that extra special sauce are where's it at. I remember Steve Albini talking about this at one point. That MOST hardcore bands bored him to tears. That there were one ONLY one or 2 that were truly special. I personally could argue for way more than that (Black Flag, circle Jerks, Adolescents, Minutemen, Husker Du, Minot Threat, Replacements, Suicidal Tendencies, Bad Brains, Misfits, you get the idea...)

Just saying I'll probably b tacking to The Mercury Method of Medal Mayhem(MMMM) fairly soon. If I haven't already. Twisted Evil

What r YOUR thoughts?! I wanna kn ow

Ooooh la la! I like these sorts of, how do I say(?)… more broad or macro questions. I think I agree that often times (almost always) you will have at least 1 true genius outlier in any “scene” or even eta of a genre or whatever and then lots and lots of good to great bands/artists in the same arena. And sometimes these other bands/artists will create something miraculous and one-off, without ever really being the same level of individual mover and shaker. Not sure I’m making sense.

The point is, awesome question and thanks got shouting out me diary! I look forward to seeing what/who/which you tackle first.

WHO are the Most INFLUENTIAL Metal Bands of The 80s?!?!

Just bought tickets to see Candlemass in concert!!! Twisted Evil To help cajole my girlfriend into coming with me, I told her they were one of the most influential metal bands of the 80s! (Metal's not her favorite although she rocked out with me to Anthrax last year.)

"Top ten", I proclaimed! "Easy!" Which got me to thinking. What really are the Top TEN most influential metal bands of the 80s? (I'll show you mine if YOU show me yours! )

Repo's Top TEN most INFLUENTIAL METAL Bands of The 80s!!!
(listed chronologically)

1. Iron Maiden (NWOBHM)
2. Venom (Extreme Metal)
3. Metallica (Speed Metal, Thrash)
4. Slayer (Darkened Thrash, Proto- Death)
5. Queensryche (Progressive Metal)
6. Bathory (Black Metal)
7. Helloween (Power Metal)
8. Candlemass (Doom Metal)
9. Death (Death Metal)
10. Godflesh (Industrial Metal, Sludge Metal)

Napalm Death should really be on here. Think But, who to take out?!?! Certainly NOT Candlemass!!!
