39. "St. Louis Blues" by Bessie Smith and Louis Armstrong
The complexity and importance of "St. Louis Blues" cannot be understated.
Originally composed by W.C. Handy in 1914, this 1925 version which feature two of the greatest artists of their time, Bessie Smith and Louis Armstrong, is the definitive version.
It is a song that defies an easy categorization as Jazz or Blues in that it is one of the only tunes of the era to break the 12 bar blues scale. Its a great song, and the second half especially makes it an enduring piece of the time.
Well, this is pretty much one of the only songs about teenage romance that is sincere and real enough to not be weird or saccharine. Congratualtions Alex Chilton and Chris Bell for being some of the greatest songwriters of their time.
