Possible inclusion for hip hop list: The Go! Team?

Hmmmm... Has strands of hip hop, no doubt, but I probably wouldn't add it. Though maybe one could make an argument for it along the lines of some of the "questionable/arguable" selections that I've already included.

Not sure right now ... maybe...

For much of the year, I've been more consumed by paintings (and, at various points along side this, sculpture ... on occasion, architecture), than anything else. Cinema had a good run, but my consumption of paintings/visual art has hardly waned so has made it a little tougher to stick with another art for very long while this remains the most consistent central interest. Especially when confronted with creative geniuses the likes of Michelangelo, Leonardo and others, you can't find what they bring to the table anywhere else and can only get a similar "fix" with geniuses on the order of Beethoven, Bach, Mozart and approach it with some others. So I guess what I'm saying is that it's a hard knock life having to deal with that Laughing

So, recently, I finished revising my "Greatest" (7.3 and above) and "Great" (6.8/10-7.2/10) paintings lists to where their formatting is fixed and now includes artist pages for each selection (the artist pages still in early stages) where their additional images/links are now located (instead of all on the main pages, which was causing massive slows, especially in edit mode). This took a stupid amount of time to rearrange and it's a good thing I wasn't being secretly recorded while doing so because of how many obscenities I flung at my laptop screen.

I'm not sure what I'll get into next. I revisited When Harry Met Sally last night and it gave me a mild urge to maybe work on a romantic comedies sub-genre list. Some of the more recent lists that I've worked on (including hip hop) where I intentionally had "below 6.8" as part of my focus, has paid off in terms of confidence/accuracy in these ranges, which is leading to some re-thinking of some film ratings, and romantic comedies would of course be as good as a genre as any to tackle this area.

Working on this at the moment... Genre requirements may be a tad loose. Key for inclusion is that it must mix comedy/satire and romantic relationships or sex as its primary, main themes being developed/expressed across the film. Naturally, as the rating gets higher, the "standard romantic or sex comedy" that is known by mainstream tendencies (such as When Harry Met Sally or Sleepless in Seattle being quite standard, classic examples), often gets murkier, more originally, daringly, diversely, audaciously expressed. Bunuel especially is a bit tough to judge in terms of whether the films I've (tentatively) included should be added, as the satire can be pretty black and the "comedy" perhaps too deft (Belle de Jour). Next to such selections will be indications that I am unsure of qualification, so may need to think about it some more or revisit to double check if the themes are strong enough as main points of the film. Recommendations welcome of course...

Well if you're looking for another potential below 6.8, listen to Luv(sic) Hexalogy by Nujabes. He's actually pretty critically acclaimed, yet Scaruffi hasn't mentioned him at all. I honestly think the album's pretty good, but idk what you/Scaruffi would rate it.

Thanks! Haven't heard it. Feel free to remind me if I haven't got to it and you see that I'm listening to hip hop again. I may return to hip hop soon (or maybe non, I'm not sure...) as I would like to fill out that list a bit more plus there are several already on there that I need to revisit -- my interests are just kind of fickle right now beyond the sustained consumption of paintings/visual art.

Sorry, it's been quite a while for that album, and I'm not really listening to any jazz much these days. But maybe remind me when I am? I can never stay away from any of my favorite arts for too long, so it's bound to happen. As often though, it is crucial to hear the playing as gesticulations, vocalizations, distressed or intense thoughts, outcries, yearnings, the like... (if one listens attentively, one can hear when the performer is "internalizing" and "speaking more outwardly", so these sorts of expressions can at least be estimated and often closely judged at least to the point of "more likely than not").

NEWLY WATCHED FILMS - RATED:
Silver Linings Playbook - David O. Russell (2012) 6.9/10; 6.9/10 to 7.0/10
Lars and the Real Girl - Craig Gillespie (2007) 6.9/10; 6.9/10 to 7.0/10
Palm Springs - Max Barbakow (2020) 6.8/10
Midnight in Paris - Woody Allen (2011) 5.7/10
Top Gun: Maverick - Joseph Kosinski (2022) 5.3/10 ... Personally not a huge fan of this sort of cinema, but it was entertaining, fun, and is conveyed with an unflagging conviction, intensity and determination that the first one never really had, and thus manages a bit more import, suspense and emotional grip, with Maverick quoting the original and surpassing it in pretty much every way (save perhaps the amusing, sometimes hilarious, subtext of the first). The flight scenes here are among the best ever filmed in terms of pure action spectacle (aided by the fact that they are clearly really flying and filming inside and around actual F-18s) and so those sequences get pretty palpable, both the ferocious sound design and the immersive cinematography. It is nice to see an action film that doesn't rely so much on CGI, a rarity these days, so even if I'm not a huge fan of blockbuster action cinema in general, I nevertheless respect the effort and integrity put into this from a technical standpoint, and I hope it proves rejuvenating to producers/directors in this regard so that more films do the same. The film checks all the dramatic, suspense and action boxes that a big budget blockbuster popcorn flick should, with Cruise delivering a vastly superior performance to his much younger self in the original. This was very much made for the big screen, so if you're going to see it, see it in theaters.
10 Things I Hate About You - Gil Junger (1999) 4.8/10
