Awesome, thanks Blueboy and Antonio Smile

I have a bit of tallying to do.

(Antonio, feel free to add more whenever — and Blueboy, don't forget about Best Score Mr. Green)

I've been working on my list. I actually don't think I'll be hitting 100. Looks like it'll cap around 75 atm.

Thanks Hayden. I shall have to think some more on the best soundtrack. Still can’t decide on High School Musical or Glee for the top spot d'oh!

A love letter to public television,

There was a show on the local PBS station called "Rare Visions and Roadside Revelations". It features three Kansans exploring the country for folk art creations and roadside attractions. During the 13 years it was on TV, they traveled to 47 states to catalogue and showcase the weird, the wonderful, and the heartwarming. It had a remarkable impact on me, and I think about it often. I recently found out that all of the episodes are online for free on the PBS website many of which I have not seen since I was a child. I can remember watching some episodes and being astounded that art and artists could exist anywhere and everywhere.

Here's the full description from PBS.

Launched in 1995, Rare Visions & Roadside Revelations sought out a hidden world of outsider artists and, in a traveling show format, brought their eclectic work to the viewers of public television. The series followed Randy Mason, Mike Murphy and Don the Camera Guy as they loaded up their cramped minivan and hit the road to document grassroots arts environments and offbeat attractions of all kinds, exploring human creativity across 47 states and four time zones. Along the way, the crew mixed in the odd and the unusual — roadside attractions that they liked to say "your father would never stop the car for."

Rare Visions & Roadside Revelations became a serious repository of interviews and photographic documentation of a large number of these sites, many of which have been torn down in the years since the episodes were filmed. The show’s legacy was cemented when The Kohler Foundation, a philanthropic organization known for art preservation, accessioned show footage into its collection as an archive of the life’s work of many of the artists featured in the series.

It is still, to this day, one of the best travel programs that I've ever watched. Many of the grassroots artists that are featured on this program may have never had some of their art shown to the world if it were not for the intrepid crew of Randy, Mike, and Don. This program lives by the motto of Gusteau in Ratatouille. "Anyone can cook". Or, in this case, anyone can, uh, art?

I love the low budget. I love the platform that they gave to people. I love the people. I love the dry and silly humor. I love the respect for art. I love Don the Camerman. I love that they throw a baseball around at the end of an episode. (Not the first one, but ones after) I love regionalism and eccentricity. I love the world's largest ball of video tape. I love public television for letting stuff like this exist. And, although it may be long forgotten by the handful who originally saw these episodes broadcast, I'm sure that it lives on in the hearts of some that felt impacted by this in a way that I did. It's a true testament to the undaunted spirit of human creativity that exists in every single one of us. I'm sure of it.

I also never realized that this wasn't broadcast outside of the KC metro area (at least I don't think so) so I'll post a link to the first episode if you're interested in this kind of thing.

Cheers Hayden. Some great scores there. I’ve got original twin peaks, Fargo & stranger things on my provisional list. Still some narrowing down and ranking to do. This is a great idea for a poll. Really enjoying pulling the lists together. Thanks for organising
