Return Of 4Eva by Big K.R.I.T.

Luckily I found this on streaming because as on over 50 year old Australian I have no idea what datpiff is Embarassed Although a few songs are missing from the tracklist here on BEA it'll do. This is the 3rd Big K.R.I.T. album I have listened to now, and although I don't dislike his work at all, I just don't find it that interesting. His voice is relatively smooth, it's all a bit more soulful than normal, and I have no issue with the lyrics which most of the time I was happy to pay attention to, but none of these positives were enough for me to say I liked the album. I liked it more than K.R.I.T. Wuz Here, but I still think 4eva Is a Mighty Long Time is his best of the three I've heard.

Eagles is the only one of those I've heard recently and I wouldn't make someone listen to it unwillingly, so lets go with Tears For Fears, which I haven't heard probably since around then. I don't remember much about it and have no idea what I would think of it now.

Sorry, should have included a link... I just checked what songs were missing on streaming, and it's some of the best ones d'oh!

Apparently some of the tracks on there have also been altered to cut certain samples.

If you want to fill the gaps on Spotify, this EP has most of the others in their original form.

Songs From The Big Chair by Tears For Fears

This was definitely the one of the ten I wanted to hear most. I love their debut and this one has been on my to-do list for a while. The production and vocals are both strong. As for the songwriting, the clear standouts here are the biggest hits (to be specific: Shout, Everybody Wants To Rule The World & Head Over Heels). All three are classics, but the rest of the album doesn't measure up to the high bar. It's all good, but doesn't stand out for catchiness or lyrical depth. While The Hurting was filled with unrelenting darkness befitting its title and cold production to match, the follow-up lands in more emotionally and sonically mixed territory. It's very possible it will click next time, but as an album, Songs From The Big Chair falls just short of greatness for me on first listen. 3.5/5.

I've got a hectic schedule these days, but I'll try to participate. Hopefully this game will get a Revival (2017).

(1)

Green River by Creedence Clearwater Revival
I'm amazed by how much I like Creedence lol. Didn't care for them even during my classic rock phase, and now suddenly their sound makes sense to me. It's groovy, country inspired, not obnoxious at all. Free flowing and fun af. The vibe is just there. Specifically, Green River probably has even better and more consistent atmosphere when compared to Cosmo's Factory, but the latter has better singles. For now, I prefer their 1970 classic, but I can definitely see Green River growing on me. Easy to understand why it's a lot of people's favourite. I can't think of an apt comparison right now, but I'm sure there are a couple of popular bands whose earlier album is more consistent and contains a couple of big hits, while the later universally acclaimed masterpiece finds the band at the top of their game, has all the hits, but also contains a few mediocre tracks. 8/10

(2)
Baystate, Crime Of The Century is a fun prog rock album with strong pop sensibilities. Might be the one to get you into 70s prog.

Crime Of The Century by Supertramp

My second Supertramp album, and just as with Breakfast In America, I really like it. The beauty of the production, the instrumental talent, and the catchiness of the songwriting are all major points in the album's favor. The vocals are nice. The lyrics are rather overcooked, and I can't say I love the choice of lyrical themes or the execution. However, they don't detract in a significant way. Hide In Your Shell and Dreamer are the standout tracks on this first listen, and it won't be the last. 3.5/5.

P.S. I don't think I've disliked any 70s prog yet, and I love a few albums, like Close To The Edge & In The Land Of Grey And Pink.

2. Listen to the only one of those I've heard, a very good album imo:

Oh sorry, I didn't mean to imply you dislike 70s prog, but I remember (or misremember?) a comment where you said that particular genre still hasn't clicked with you.

(1)

Communion by 박지하 [Park Jiha]
Wow this is absolutely brilliant. The folky, minimalist and avantgarde sound Park Jiha creates on both of her releases I've heard is something I could listen to forever. Gentle, beautiful, somewhat repetitive, but always manages to surprise as well. The instruments she uses (piri (double reed bamboo flute), saenghwang (mouth organ) & yanggeum (hammered dulcimer)), as well as her band members (Kim Oki: Tenor saxophone, bass clarinet, John Bell: Vibraphone, Kang Tekhyun: Percussions) create one of the more unique minimalist quartets I've heard. Nothing much to say here after only 1 listen, but it's already a favourite and might easily crack the top 100 of the decade. High 8.5/10

(2)
I've never really loved any Death Cab albums, but they do have several near perfect songs, 2 of them featured on Transatlanticism (the opener and the title track). Try that one, Bay.

Oh yeah, definitely true that it hasn't clicked to the point of being a genre I love overall. And I misremembered a bit: I did really dislike Leftoverture, but that's the only one so far.

Transatlanticism by Death Cab For Cutie

This is the third Death Cab For Cutie album I've heard after We Have The Facts And We're Voting Yes (very good) and Plans (great). I also love The Postal Service, so it was about time I listened to Ben Gibbard's highest-ranked album. Overall a very solid record in terms of songwriting, instrumentals, and vocals. Transatlanticism is a thoroughly enjoyable listen and potential grower, but I don't have much to say about it, which says less about it and more about my faculties being affected by having COVID at the moment. I'll start this at a high 3.5/5.

Take A Picture by Margo Guryan
Gentle, beautiful, baroque, slightly folky and psychedelic pop. Very enjoyable. Her whispered vocals don't really fit the "sunshine pop" mold (or at least my perception of sunshine pop), but the lyrics mostly do. An interesting juxtaposition. "Pretty love songs always make me cry" is a great example of this. The closer, Love, is the only track that goes into the more experimental, improv territory. A nice detour at the end. It's a consistently good pop record from one of the forgotten legends. 8/10

Interstellar Space is a difficult record and not exactly peak Coltrane imo, but ultimately still a good listen. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.
