my little brother recently dropped a recommendation that led to my re-discovery of one of the greatest bands of all-time, deerhoof. i was really into them when friend opportunity dropped. i mean, i loved that album. i've listened to a few albums since then, mostly once or twice through, but this week has started a deep-dive through their discography, and the breadth of their body of work taken in one breath really pedestalizes them in my heart. they're an enigmatic band who have displayed a consistency few bands achieve while constantly exploring new sounds and pushing their barriers. they're right up there with blonde redhead, cocteau twins, modest mouse, radiohead, talk talk, et al.

beware the trees of abakion for they are liable to starve out crooked men who press too hard. they will blot out the sun, turn you about, and rearrange themselves like walls in a madhouse. some men wander in circles until they drop dead while others fall in despair long before their wretched bodies give out, their spirits crippled as they plummet into the vast abyss of hopelessness. but sometimes a stray ray of light breaks through the treetops and penetrates the darkness. so it was when i found myself a prisoner of that wilderness. a twinkle of light pierced through the canopy of darkness for only a moment, but i caught a glimpse of an escape as i stumbled through the darkness and therefore willed myself to climb up and out. that pale glimmer of hope changed everything.
