After a decade of being hunky dory I got absolutely slammed with the headcold from hell, so I've been a bit slow on the upkeep—
Noms were neat.
Dug the love or Triangle of Sadness, Banshees and All Quiet.
So many first-time acting noms was awesome too— especially considering some are veteran actors (Gleeson, Farrell, Lee Curtis, Yeoh)—
Brian Tyree Henry becoming an Academy-Award nominee is pretty awesome too (albeit I really wasn't super hot on his film)—
Riseborough landing a nom after that shockingly last-minute unorthodox campaign is insane— haven't seen the film, but I'm looking forward to seeing what the hype is about.

I've yet to see these major nominees—
Elvis
Top Gun: Maverick
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Avatar: The Way of Water
Babylon
The Whale
Women Talking (has anyone here seen this?)

Babylon has been high on my to-watch list for probably two years now, so I'll be getting around to that as soon as I can, and The Whale looks good, so I'll definitely screen that at some point, but I have 0 interest in the other four.

but I can wish ("Naatu Naatu" would also be a welcome surprise).

Naatu Naatu is definitely the frontrunner at this point.
Nobody Like U is the biggest banger released in a film this year, but whatever.

Keeping in mind everything I just said, this isn't a fair ballot, but if I had to jot my picks—

Best Picture — Triangle of Sadness
Best Director — Ostlund (with McDonagh very close behind)
Actor — (I've yet to see 3 of these, so I'll have to pass)
Actress — Yeoh (this is stupid close— Blanchett killed it, but because she's already won twice, etc, and Yeoh might never have another chance, etc)
Sup Actor — Ke Huy Quan
Sup Actress — .............. ?????? Think
OG Screenplay — The Banshees of Inisherin
AD Screenplay — (Haven't seen enough of these either— Ishiguro winning would be cool though)
Animated — Marcel
International — EO (why RRR wasn't submitted is a mystery)
Score — Banshees, but apparently Babylon is incredible
Song — This Is A Life
Sound — The Batman
Cinematography — Bardo
Editing — Everything Everywhere

I'm not going to go on a spiel or anything, especially considering how glad I am Triangle of Sadness landed the cut after months of will-it-won't-it, but I have to express a slight disappointment Nope didn't land a single nomination. I'm not sure why the Academy ignored it. At all. I mean— they like Peele still, right? And it's eeeeaassyyy one of the best films of the year. Should have landed most of the technical fields, maybe even BP.

(....or maybe I just like it more than other people, iunno)

Yo

Pretty good all in all, I don't object to the Best Picture nomination, though I totally get why there was no Director nomination, despite the controversy. Competently done for sure, and I'm sure Polley will nail a nom in that category one of these days, but this certainly didn't merit it. The screenplay is a definite strength though, and is currently my vote for best of the Adapted Screenplay nominations (still have to see Living though).

The other real strength is Claire Foy's performance, but that may just be a bias as I've loved Foy ever since her Little Dorrit performance way back when.

Looking forward to it. Polley's never been my favourite director, but the clips/gist I've seen from it looks up my alley.

Sidenote, I'll be posting our annual best films of the year poll one week before the Oscars. It'll be open 2 months.

Yeah, I was planning to see it last night with my friend Laura Gordon, but she bailed, so instead I went to the Chicago premiere of Framing Agnes, which almost certainly is my favorite film of the past 12 months.

Even though it's the (fourth?) Nick Cave 'documentary' in less than a decade, I've yet to tire from them— This Much I know To Be True is an experience. It encapsulates this decent into minimalism Cave's had the last four years— almost nothing remains of the punk-rock singer's 80s snark— you know you're watching an artist mature, hearing Cave's voice now long into the wine/scotch/brandy route. Might sound better than ever. Despite my expectations, it's far more joyous than I expected (especially after Cave experienced the death of another child)— mostly black humour, dark humour, grim jabs here and there, but there's a light— something to celebrate. It's very crafted, and one of my favourites of the year.

It reminds me a lot of what I wanted to do, working in a studio. Ellis and Cave run laps around anything I could ever, but to see such a full, well-balanced sound come out of such a selective team is what I think most recording artists strive for.

Don't think anyone here wouldn't mind giving it a shot.

Warning: Warren Ellis provides one of the most disturbing/shocking/grotesque scenes in all of cinema.

Well, it took 29 viewings (and I've since had a 30th), which in and of itself should indicate that I did not take this decision lightly, but...

...I have come to believe that Everything Everywhere All at Once is the greatest film ever made.

Feels off, but there's a slight chance Wes Anderson will have two films out this year. Asteroid City's a tentative summer release and The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar is scheduled to land Netflix late autumn.

Despite some buzz it'll land Cannes (and the fact it was announced first) I could see Asteroid City being delayed until 2024. Still hush hush / no promo, etc— alternatively, I have a gut feeling Henry will be chopped up into a miniseries, but either way— looking forward to both. Wes diving back into Dahl is a perfect match.

2023's actually looking pretty hype.
Anticipating lots.
