My recollection of this is that I loved the album at first, then I hated it, then I slowly started liking it again. I think it had something to do with seeing them live — when I actually saw what Fred Schneider's role was in the band, especially onstage, it really made me wonder why he was there. But later on, I realized that his purpose and presence was completely legitimate. The rest of the band weren't particularly charismatic, but Fred was so completely over the top, that didn't really matter. He forced them into a particular attitudinal stance that made them a party band, as opposed to other Athens bands like Pylon or Love Tractor, or REM for that matter, all of whom (at least technically) made better music.
Regardless, I tend to prefer their second album over this one, simply because I perceive it as having less Fred — even though the amount of Fred is pretty much the same on both records.

This is great, been fairly high on my overall chart for as long as I can remember and deservedly so (though I'm actually on a really big Wild Plant kick at the moment which I now think is just as good), anyway, this has got the right amounts of lots of things I love in music in all the right places and then some.
Trying not to take it too serious help I feels, one of those albums you can almost let lose to and have a great time with regardless I feel.
Lot of shite there but it's a quality album. _________________
