I think it was really quite daring for someone in 1971 to attempt a textured light-blue-to-purple vertical gradient that actually breaks in the middle (between "across the" and "water") and flips back to white, in order to highlight the word "water." Imagine how many amateur desktop publishers/designers using Aldus PageMaker 1.0 and CorelDraw 1.0 in the mid- to late-80s were influenced by that! (Some of those people might have even been musicians themselves too, y'know.) Also, it had two hit singles instead of just one, so that proved he was "serious."

One of my favorite Elton John albums and one in a string of classics that are must listens for any fan. Elton John relied a bit more on string arrangements on this album after showing some influence from American music with the previous album. Tiny Dancer is one of my favorite songs of all time and Levon and the title track are both among John's strongest tunes too.

This album tends to be remembered for Tiny Dancer by most, Levon by a few less, but I’ve always enjoyed the record as a whole. The foreboding and chilling title track would be right up there with my favorite Elton John songs. _________________ Attention all planets of the solar federation: We have assumed control.
