Hi
How should we rate solo artists those were a members in big bands?
I mean, John Lennon for example, rating him for his solo career is defferent than rating him for his overall career! because his overall career includes his Beatles' membership, which gives him more credit in general!
And the same for other beatles, Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel and many others.

Personally, I'd rate an artist solely (no pun intended) on his works apart from the band. There isn't much of a drop-down in quality if you're going to compare John Lennon to the Beatles, but it's important to make the distinction between, say, The Dismemberment Plan and Travis Morrison's solo output.

Still, how you determine something's worth is entirely up to you. If you feel like judging solo output in the context of previous band efforts (as many music journalists tend to do), then all power to you. It's difficult to approach a solo album as an entirely removed organism.

agree with the above. It should be entirely up to you how you rate something, so long as it truly reflects what you think of something.

I see there is much of drop-down in quality in comparing "Solo" John Lennon to The Beatles. Beatles' outputs are way better (by mainstream) than Lennon' solo outputs, but you're right if you mean "just" John Lennon.

If you like the truth, that "up to you" thing makes no sense here, it will make the average rating something in between the solo effort and the overall effort, which it doesn't happen to bands or solo-way-popular-than-band artists (ex. Bjork), or "just" solo artists.

So, I see to give solo artists their FULL credit (if have) while rating them, and that will solve the problem in every way. it just needs an announcement for.
