Even with the amount of high praise this album receives, and the several listens and re-listens i've given it lately, i just don't see what the fuss is about. It sounds a bit messy, unfocused and rushed to me, whereas the blue album is a masterpiece. 5.5-6/10 at the most......

Okay, sorry, guys, maybe comparing it to Tool wasn't very nice. I was gonna compare it to Symphony X originally, and I think that would be the better metaphor. My point is, why do so many prog metal bands make such atrociously long albums, and their only excuse is that it's a "rock opera"? Whatever.

Anyway, another thing I love about this album is how it combines perfect math rock with perfect sixties pop in every solo. Every note is like an expanded part of Maxwell's Equation, bringing life to an otherwise dreary universe of relationships. Am I the only one that likes mathy music here? Oh well.

I like this album. It's definitely one of Weezer's best. The other one being The Blue Album, as it's known. Unfortunately, I think it's been downhill for Weezer ever since. Pink Triangle and Across the Sea are stunningly original songs. Th former has one of the most clever lines I've ever heard: "Everyone's a little queer. Why can't she be a little straight?" Does anyone else think El Scorcho is an obvious Pavement homage? It's got that sloppy, quirky, feel to it and deadpan vocals that are very reminiscent of Pavement. Come to think of it, The Sweater Song kind of was too.

It's such a shame that so many crappy bands like Tool waste whole seventy-minute CD's rambling on about crap like parabolas

1. I see no issue with parabolas.

2. "Parabola" isn't really about parabolas, so much as it a song about "transcending the physical body" through controlled pain, or, the practice of "lachrymology".
