or the other way around :
does listening to a new album in the background diminish your reading experience ?
the author tries to install a certain atmosphere, and listening to something in a completely different style at the same time would ruin that imo.
personally, I can't read a novel and listen to music at the same time...
and back to topic : yes, I pay full attention to the music on first listen. _________________ I'll be your plastic toy.

Nor can I, unless it's completely familiar and without words. And even then, no music would still be better for reading.

I believe you should give the album your attention. If you don't, it would probably just feel weird after it's done. It'd almost feel like you've listened to nothing at all, right?
I'm not saying don't so anything else while listening to music (which can be quite nice sometimes though ), but focus on the music instead of reading a book or watching tv/ movies at the same time

I voted yes only because I often am so excited to listen to a new CD/ appreciate old music I try and do it while I am cleaning or something. When I do that, the album is quickly over before I can decide whether or not I like it.
If you really want to understand an album, give it your undivided attention.
If you want a simple taste, kinda like skipping through the album after 15 seconds of listening, and don't care to really listen to it, then by all means- Rob yourself of the experience.

As far as the Einstein quote, which I too love.... Isn't it easier to do one thing at a time instead of two?

Your sub-conscience mind will pick up and store the information of the second thing. _________________ .

I actually agree with this. Sometimes a listen, that really isn't a listen, but is picked up subconsciously will then turn into an interesting musical experience later. All attention needs to be given for the awesome experience, but I wouldn't say the first listen is ruined by having it in the background.
The more I think about it, good music has some kind of journey with you. Some of my best friends I didn't like when I first met them. I bet some of my favorite albums were the same. I DISAGREE that the first listen matters, but agree that in order for you to finally cognate that you like something, it has to have your attention.
One thing I like doing if I have to do something else, but want to enjoy music is headphones.

Sometimes it can work, depending on whether or not the music really fits the novel. Post-rock is pretty good to listen to while reading, because it's atmospheric and doesn't draw away or take attention from the novel while you're reading.
Whenever I used to read Fahrenheit 451, I would read it while listening to Lift Your Skinny Fists and I found it leant pretty damn well to the experience. _________________ A dick that's bigger than the sun.

I guess my thing is that I don't really think there's anything mystical or supernaturally important about the "first listen".
I'd say that if you NEVER listened to an album all the way through, giving it your full attention, you can't say you've formed an opinion on it, but you can do that at any point, even after you've fallen in love with all the songs individually, no matter how many times you've had it on in the background.
I for one, am always thrilled when I find myself unexpectedly invested in a song that I had never really paid enough attention to before.
Usually happens when I'm high. Go figure.
