Got on an early R & B jag tonight. Sam Cooke, James Brown, Etta James, Ruth Brown, Jackie Wilson. My question for you is this. It's accepted as fact that as great as Otis Redding's original of Respect is, Aretha's version cuts it to ribbons. On the same album (I Never Loved A Man...)I feel she does this to Sam Cooke's A Change Is Gonna Come as well. For just about everyone else A Change Is Gonna Come[ was Barack Obama's theme song.

I am not sure I see a question in there. If you are asking which versions I prefer, the answer is:

1. Franklin's cover of Redding's Respect (although Redding's original isn't bad either)
2. Cooke's release of his song, A Change Is Gonna Come (often covered but never surpassed)

You're right, I didn't actually ask the question. LOL. But you're supposition was right. As for A Change I feel Aretha nails Sam's version to the wall. My favorite Sam song is Bring It On Home To Me, his duet with Lou Rawls.
