The Smiths are just too depressing and I find Morrissey too annoying.

Both are great bands.
BUT keep in mind that R.E.M. kept going for a long long time, allowing for their quality to have ups and downs.
The Smiths only existed for 5-6 years. Everything they did was a small masterpiece (or a big one, depends on your taste). They didn't have the time to wear off...

Poll is closed but I would have voted The Smiths. They were way more consistent over their life span. All Smiths albums are great while R.E.M. has some stinkers (Out of Time... seriously?).

These are 2 of my favorite bands and both have albums in my personal Top 5, but Smiths are superior. People voting R.E.M. need to consider that you are basically comparing 4 years of work against 30 years of R.E.M. - and the poll was still a tie. The math says, Smiths win.
