Beethoven: Sonatas No. 29 "Hammerk...av Richter
Chart: Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by satiemaniac
Rank on User's Chart: 1
Year: 2004
Rank on BEA Overall: 7,813
Average Rating: 76/100
Chart Notes: "This collection shows Richter at 60 performing some of the most demanding works in his repertoire and in the entirety of music written for piano. Without speaking to the theoretical aspects of these compositions, I can say that there is a lucid intellect and bombast prevalent throughout all three that is expressed not just handsomely but sublimely by Richter. The "Hammerklavier" in particular is an enormous piece, both in length and complexity, and the performance included here is not just admirable for the comparatively advanced age of the pianist but possibly the best ever recorded. Anyone can immediately be sucked into these works, both for the compositional prowess on display and for Richter's executions. These are winding epics expressed through one instrument, like the epiclets of Joyce's Dubliners or incredibly complicated mathematical proofs. Truly, undeniably, the peak of musical expression."
