What is your favourite and least favourite genre that you have heard?

Also list an album or two from your favourite genre so that we can all give it a listen!

I can't really say I have a favorite genre. A lot of my favorite albums fall under the umbrellas of noise rock, post-punk, hip-hop, and a handful of others, but looking at my chart I've never been able to discern much of a unifying theme among all or even most of the albums there.

As for least favorite genre, I don't really like to word it that way. I make an active effort to be open-minded toward all genres, though of course being a human being I certainly have my limitations as far as that goes. The genre I've had the most trouble getting into is reggae. I'm not sure why, I just haven't been able to get into anything in the genre. Granted I haven't necessarily done that much exploration of it, so hopefully that'll change someday.

Hard to say this. Each genre has some beautiful gems and a crapload of shit at the same time. Genres are a nice (but difficult and limited) way to classify music, but they are not a correct indication of the music that's about to follow, what I'll feel at the music or what my final oppinion of the music is gonna be. It's not like I pick something up and see: oh this is punk, I'm gonna hate it.

That being said, I like quite a lot of prog, jazz and psych albums, while I'm also starting to appreciate a few post-rock albums. Conversly, there are only a few punk albums I like and most (simple) hard rock is quite boring.

some examples:

prog: + in the court of the crimson king, mirage by camel ...
prog: - most by gentle giant, much by ELP and some by any other progband ...

jazz: + Coltrane, Parker, Davis & Mingus ...
jazz: - basicaly what our music teacher learnt us (count basie and such) ...

punk: + london calling, pure mania by the vibrators, marquee moon by television ...
punk: - a lot of other stuff: sex pistols, ramones (in both cases, except for a few songs) ...

hard rock:+ led zeppelin, black sabbath ...
hard rock: - ACDC ...

Conclusion: don't judge the album or band by the genre

Favourite: Nu-disco

Where You Go I Go Too by Lindstrøm

Since I Left You by The Avalanches

It's Album Time by Todd Terje

Least favourite: Hip-hop

Though I downloaded the following yesterday and I'm loving it so far.

Run The Jewels by Run The Jewels

As others have said though, I don't have anything against any genre, it's just that I havn't connected with hip-hop. I'd be happy if I did get to like it more, hip-hop is today what rock was during the 60s and 70s in terms of popularity and having something interesting to say.

Interesting. Reggae gets nowhere near as much credit as it deserves, mostly because the majority of casual listeners start and stop at Marley. But once you get over that stigma you will find LOADS worth listening to... especially if you love Wobble's basslines from Metal Box (take Lydon's vocals off "The Suit", for example, and you've got a pretty solid dub track).

Back to topic - my favourite genres are punk/post-punk, 'reggae' (specifically dub and roots) and indie/twee-pop. Links for charts that cover the latter two genres are below if you want some recs.

As for least favourite... I've never got on with Jazz and doubt after nearly 40 years of listening to music I ever will. Don't hate it, just don't get it... whether it be Davis, Mingus, Coltrane or anyone. Just ain't my bag.

Don't think I can be specific; purely because there are so many genres, and many people may interpret the same music as different genres. So..

Favorite: Emo or Indie rock (2nd one is pretty braod)

Least favorite: Deathcore, electronic, or hip hop. Nothing I dislike in particular, but I put the genres I tend to not listen to as much as others.

EDIT: Actually, Reggae might be my least favorite genre.
