I love Eels, especially their 90s output. While Beautiful Freak had this directness while also having unpredictable structures occasionally, this is a lot more safe, fragile, and has some of the prettiest compositions I've ever heard. But that doesn't stop it from being a powerhouse of an album. I can't decide between those two, they're just so amazing. _________________

Perfectly balances between being a powerful, personal piece and being a lighthearted bit of fun; few albums shake me to the core, while making me happy I'm alive at the same time.

It didn't end up being as depressing as I was expecting. Climbing to the Moon is the best track.

One of three masterpieces from E, along with Beautiful Freak and Daisies Of The Galaxy. Knowing what he was dealing with while he wrote and recorded this album makes it even more haunting and sad than it already is. But the beauty of it is that while it's often depressing, it's hopeful too. An absolutely essential album in my eyes. Everyone should hear it at least once, and if you can stop after one listen I'd be surprised.

Omgomgomgomgomgomg this album
I love Eels so much, E is a genius and this is the best thing he's put out yet, some of his best songwriting on display. It can be depressing, but damn it's beautiful.
"Life is funny
But not ha ha funny
Peculiar i guess
You think i got it all going my way
Then why am i such a fucking mess?"
E's just bearing it all. This album is vulnerable, it's cynical, it's satirical, it's honest, it's everything. It's the entire human experience. _________________ 2023 Chart

I think some of you may know that Mark Oliver Everett is Hugh Everett III's son (the man behind the many worlds interpretation of Quantum Mechanics). "Baby Genius" is about him. _________________ "I feel like for the last two years there’s been sort of a sonic evolution happening and I’ve been experimenting more and more."

"3 Speed" and "Last Stop" are two of my favorite songs. They're so beautifully written and E's lyrics are sung with such a painful sounding voice that it resonates like no other. This album is mainly like that. I honestly can't help but get a feeling of depression throughout which is what makes this album one of the best.

Somehow I completely missed this in the 90s, only to discover it a decade later.
Not quite as good as Beautiful Freak, but still top-notch. _________________ Finnegan was super bad-ass.
