- Post subject: Fantasy Oscars
|
So, full disclosure. I don't like sports. As such, I have almost zero conversations with most people during football season, mostly due to most being consumed with (what else?) Fantasy Football. So instead, here's my take on it... Fantasy Oscars. Or more accurately, Fantasy Awards Season, but that name isn't quite as catchy.
The rules are inspired by Fantasy Football, albeit with some drastic departures. Essentially, rather than pick from football players to form a team, you pick filmmakers to create a movie. I'm calling mine "Behold the Turtle!" for absolutely no reason whatsoever.
As the awards season drags on, anytime one of these people gets nominated for an award you get points, then you get more if they win their award. Even if you pick, say, Spielberg for your director but he gets a nomination for writing, you still get points.
What positions in your team/film can you fill? Here's the breakdown.
Producers: Up to 3 people
Director: 1 person only
Actors/Actresses: Up to 5, with no distinction between men or women, lead or supporting
Screenwriters: Up to 3
Original Score/Composer: 1 person only
Original Song: 1 writer only
Editor (film or Sound): 1 person only
Cinematographer: 1 person only
Visual Effects Artists: Up to 2
Miscellaneous: Up to 2
The rules being, the person you pick for a specific department must be fulfilling that role in a film this year. This rule applies to all categories except the Miscellaneous, which you can assign any person to any role (Michael Fassbender as, say, Butt Cheek Fitness Consultant). Again though, even if the person is nominated for an entirely different role, they still get points for a nomination.
What is the breakdown of points? Simple.
If nominated for an Oscar or a BAFTA, your person gets 20 points. If they win, they get an additional 50 points.
If nominated for a Golden Globe or a European Film Award, they get 10 points. A win brings in 30 more points.
If nominated for a Broadcast Film Award, Critics Choice Award, Satellite Award, or EDA (from the Alliance of Women Film Journalists) they get 5 points, with a win being worth another 15 points.
And if nominated for an MTV Movie Award, they get 1 point. Or 5 for a win.
But, you ask, what's to prevent everyone from picking the same people for their team? Well as soon as one person is picked, no other film that year can have them. How do we keep the first players from getting all the best filmmakers? By assigning point values.
Each person participating in Fantasy Oscars receives 300 points (averaging 15 points per available slot). You spend these points "hiring" the filmmakers to be on your movie. But they have costs....
Any filmmaker costs 10 points per Oscar or BAFTA they've won in the past, plus 5 points for any Golden Globe they've won. For example, Meryl Streep costs 90 points, Martin Scorsese costs 70, whereas Leonardo DiCaprio would only cost 10 and Bradley Cooper is free.
Make any sense? For an example, here's what your film could look like....
Behold the Turtle!
Producers: Megan Ellison (free) and Brad Pitt (20 points)
Director: Tim Burton (free)
Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch (free), Jennifer Lawrence (30 points), Christoph Waltz (50), Amy Adams (5), Robert Pattinson (free)
Screenwriters: Dan Futterman (free) and Scott Alexander (5)
Cinematographer: Hoyte Van Hoytema (free)
Editor: Lee Smith (free)
Original Score: Mark Mothersbaugh (free)
Original Song: Andy Samberg (10)
Visual Effects: -------
Miscellaneous: Woody Allen (165 points!!) for Eyeglass Design, and Christopher Nolan (free) for Best Use of Gratuitous Gargling Sound Effects Mixing
.... all of which will leave me with a comfortable 15 points leftover for next year. And I think official choices would have to be in by October 31st, seeing as most of the accepted awards ceremonies would begin announcing their nominees shortly after.
So, now that all is said and done, anybody want to join in on this? Anybody have further suggestions or modifications or complaints?
If you want to participate and are ready to draft your team, please see the companion thread.

Yeah. My best idea was just turn-based picking (i.e. if someone before you picks Spike Jonze as a director you can't, but could pick him as screenwriter) but an organized draft would work much better.
How precisely do you recommend doing so?

I missed a bit on how the points allowed on your team works and it makes more sense now, sorry
Unfortunately, much like my fantasy drafts for football, I have a feeling I'll go for ones I like more than one's who'll win awards ... but whatever, my Mark Duplass / Dule Hill film written by Edgar Wright and made by Hammer & Tongs will have to remain a thing of private dreams for fear of ridicule ... Though for real I feel like that'd be actually great _________________
