These guys are probably contenders as well - still actually working my way through their stuff, but there's not too many that can compete with them over the last ten (and maybe fifteen) years in the alternative rock / hard rock side of things.
From UK indie scene I'd probably mention Cherry Ghost - first two albums are just packed full of great songs.
if we're talking 2005-2014 then here's the top 10 bands:
1 .Interpol
2. LCD Soundsystem
3. The Strokes
4. Built to Spill
5. Arcade Fire
6. Grizzly Bear
7. Tame Impala
8. Swans
9. TV on the Radio
10. The Mars Volta
Honorable mention: Deerhunter, Sleater-Kinney, Tindersticks, Animal Collective, The Knife, Japandroids, Coldplay, The Evpatoria Report and Muse.
So, the best band (that was new/newish) from the span of 2004-2014 was Punch Brothers. I was tempted to go with Whitey Morgan And The 78's, but they have had a different line up every album, so I can't say that I would actually call Whitey Morgan And The 78's a band.
Arcade Fire, Tame Impala (if that counts as a band). Arctic Monkeys in my opinion have put out three great albums and two forgettable albums, MGMT have been getting progressively worse, but their first two albums were some of my favorites of all time, Animal Collective have put out some really interesting music in the past ten years, and if I was allowed to put solo artists, I would definitely put Kanye West and Sufjan Stevens. _________________ These are my favorite albums right now.
These are a few of the bands that have made a big difference in my listening habits within the past decade:

Fuck Buttons

TV on the Radio
Black Country Communion
Phoenix
Florence and the Machine
Arctic Monkeys
Royal Blood
