Sup guys!

I'm not really sure how to approach this, so I guess I'll just dive right in and if anyone has any queries regards my background in music (Or life in general), feel free to as away. I am a bit intimidated by this, not gonna lie, some of the logs so far have been incredible and I really don't know how I can match them, but heck, it's all a bit of fun, so here it goes...

So I've had a reasonably busy day (By busy I mean playing pool, Xbox and watching football with mates, I also read some comics (Nerd!) and worked on my thesis for awhile, so it was at least somewhat productive anyway...). But despite this I'll find time for a few albums in my day, which included:

Hymn To The Immortal Wind by Mono
These guys are a Japanese post-rock band, I'm very hit and miss with a lot of post-rock but there's something about these guys that draws me in, a friend introduced me to them about 2 years ago but lately I've been sort of rediscovering them. I find this fascinating at times, it can send shivers down your spine but keeps drawn in all the same. It can tense but thrilling at the same time. It's kind of the soundtrack to my dreams.

Everything Will Be Alright In The End by Weezer
I actually really enjoyed this, sure, it was never going to reach the heights of their first 2 albums (Not even close), but it's a hell of a lot better than some of the other stuff they've put out in recent years (I'm looking at you Raditude). Granted, this album is a bit cringe-worthy at times, ('The British Are Coming' didn't do much for me), but I found myself really digging this for one reason or another, it's catchy and fun pop rock. it's just simple I guess and that just seems to work for Weezer in this case.

Anyway, it's jazz weekend here in Cork (Big deal!) so I've been listening to a lot of local bands as I kinda get in that mood at times like this (Not even many jazz ones...). There's some great music here that will never reach a massive world scale (There's also some atrocious stuff here too though). But anyway, I'm playing this (FREE DOWNLOADABLE) compilation of local shtuff, a good mix of different genres thrown in there too.
Drop-d: Cork Rock City Vol. 2
Personal favourites include Time Is A Thief (Metal-ish, loosely, pop metal maybe, if that could be a thing, fuck knows...), Hope Is Noise (Post-punk (Revival?), sort of, maybe a bit of noise punk also), Letter From Belgium (Ambienty/electronicy shtuff) and I'll Eat Your Face (Instrumental metal/post-rock/alt things). There's a ton of other great musicians around the city, plenty of whom I'm waiting on to release EPs/albums so it's an exciting time for music here.

Hit me up with any questions! I'll probably be back on this sooner rather than later, not like I have study to do... Anxious

Desire by Bob Dylan
This album is basically the centre of music universe. It's pretty much where everything began to fall into place and ultimately part of the reason of why I ended up here on BEA. As a kid I wasn't raised in a very musical household, in fact I heard barely any music. I was more on the nerdy side of things, though I was also sporty, video games, football and geography were my things. I was always a nerd for lists though. Anyway, back to the point and why this album is so important to me. I must've been about 14 when I started properly listening to music, got an old Zen MP3 player, which still works amazingly. At the time I filled it with random stuff, songs from mates, those compilations you get free in Sunday papers and so on, it lead me to having a bizarre collection of stuff, ranging from the Beach Boys to UB40 to Duran Duran, etc. I still wasn't overly into music and it was about 2 years later when I got an iPod for Christmas, this was the point when I started getting CDs for the first time. I got into stuff like Kaiser Chiefs, Muse, Arctic Monkeys, Snow Patrol and borrowed those NOW! compilations off my sister to fill up my iPod. It was a few months later at a mates house when I first came across Bob Dylan, that was the day things changed. I remember it so clearly in my head, we were at a mates house and he was drunkenly trying to teach himself songs on guitar via YouTube. Anyway, next thing he put on this song, 'Hurricane' by Bob Dylan, I knew the name, but knew next to nothing about this guy. But I was hooked, I'd never heard anything like it at the time. A few days later I went into the nearest record store and ploughed through all of this Bob Dylan guys albums until I found one with 'Hurricane' on it, naturally I bought it. I must have listened to that album 100+ times easily. It blew my mind. A few weeks later we got high speed internet at my house for the first time, I wasn't sure what was cool on the internet back then, so I decided to google the album and see what happened, it led me to a wiki page and in turn the Rolling Stone top 500 albums of all time list, an important discovery for me, no matter how biased it was. Like I said, I'm a nerd for lists so I went about collecting albums of the list, mainly second hand, I built up a solid collection of stuff from all different genres; The Clash, The Velvet Underground, Neil Young, Weezer, Oasis, Led Zeppelin, The Notorious B.I.G., N.W.A., Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Rage Against The Machine were just some of my earlier purchases off the top of my head. One evening I then decided that maybe there was other lists out there, I threw a few searchs into google and bam, ended up on BEA. Over time, my music tastes have developed and expanded as I've delved more into BEA, but I'll get to that later, for now I'm just basking in the glory of Bob Dylan's 'Desire'.

The rest of my day so far:

The Complete Peel Sessions 1978-2004 by The Fall
I love The Fall and this album is possibly the perfect starting point for anyone looking to get into them, it's got everything you could pretty much ask for. The Fall, to me, are the basis on which I rate post-punk, and thus far I've found very little which matches up to them, it's perfect blend of catchy fast paced punk with the rawness I generally associate with post-punk.

The First Four Years by Black Flag
Another one of my favourite bands of all time, I don't find this as strong as some of their other releases from around that period, but it's still an essential listen, that 'Louie Louie' cover is great in particular.

Apologies on the rushing with this one, busy man, I'll be back later.

I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight...a Thompson
I'll probably never grow tired of this album and to be honest at times I wonder why it's not number 1 on my overall chart. Compared to the rest of the top 10 it's probably my most recent discovery, but it feels like an old friend who has been hanging around for a long long time. I still remember the first time I listened to the album, on the way to uni on a autumn, the leaves were swirling around as walked through this tree covered walkway, 'We Sing Hallelujah' came on, I just kind of smiled to myself and kept walked, something about it just made me jump inside, something about it felt right. The album can be tragic, but heartwarming. It's a thing of beauty.

Figured I'd squeeze a few more albums in here ahead of a potentially crazy day tomorrow, starting with this:

Among The Leaves by Sun Kil Moon
Gonna quote my chart for this one, I only heard it for the first time in early 2014, but I fell in love there and then.

Kozelek's been getting a lot of love around here lately and it's perfectly understandable, the guy makes beautiful music. I'm only late on the bandwagon, still haven't even heard all the Red House Painters albums (Shame on me!). I got into Kozelek only over the past few months after being lent a hard drive off a mate for a different reason completely (Ye're all thinking porn aren't ye.....), anyway I looked through all the music on it as well naturally, I saw the name Sun Kil Moon and initially thought nothing of it, until I saw the name being thrown around BEA, this meant the next time I flicked through that folder of stuff from the hard drive for something new and Sun Kil Moon caught my eye. I realised then I actually owned and really liked Ghosts Of The Great Highway, but got mixed up with artists, having got past that awkward moment I decided to try Admiral Fell Promises, which was amazing, but then I tried Among The Leaves, which blew me away. I fell in love with the album from the start, the first five tracks were particularly brilliant, especially 'Sunshine In Chicago', now one of my favourite tracks ever made, I'll admit the second half isn't as good as the first half, but it's still amazing and one of the top 20 albums I've ever heard. To top off everything, about a week after I heard this for the first time, I learned about the existence of Benji, what a week!

And then quite the opposite with this...

Mama Said Knock You Out by LL Cool J

Cool

It's mad craic, good clean fun, nuff said!

Heartleap by Vashti Bunyan
Got a small bit of time to kill, enough for one album in detail, so this is my choice, I'll update more tonight with thoughts/nonsense and so on.

I really love Red House Painters and I'm going to listen to Sun Kil Moon discography in the next days, I hope I'll not be disappointed.

Aw, thank you!

For some reason or another I've always enjoyed Kozelek's Sun Kil Moon stuff more than Red House Painters, though I still think Red House Painters are absolutely incredible.

Still in Uni and will be for another few hours, but I've got some time off so if anyone recs like this, the album I'm currently listening to they'd be much appreciated!

Start Today by Gorilla Biscuits
I've always been a massive fan of punk like this, right up my alley so throw some recs my way!
