This is something I've thought about for a long time & I'm just mentioning it here because we are again approaching an end of year and people are seeking out the best albums of 2014. The year charts on BEA are sensitive to gaming due to the high points that can be gained from including an album from the current year in your overall chart.

I've run a quick calculation showing how the chart would look if albums from the current year & included in an overall chart updated in 2014 were excluded (current 2014 rank in brackets).

1 (3). Benji - Sun Kil Moon 679.4
2 (2). Lost In The Dream - The War On Drugs 544.6
3 (1) To Be Kind - Swans 510.4
4 (4). St. Vincent - St. Vincent 419.9
5 (8). Salad Days - Mac DeMarco 396.1
6 (6). Piñata - Freddie Gibbs & Madlib 363.9
7 (7). They Want My Soul - Spoon 350.8
8 (13). Syro - Aphex Twin 313.1
9 (5). Sun Structures - Temples 255.9
10 (9). Run The Jewels 2 - Run The Jewels 255.0
11 (21). Too Bright - Perfume Genius 252.5
12 (10). Here And Nowhere Else - Cloud Nothings 250.5
13 (11). You're Dead! - Flying Lotus 231.2
14 (16). Morning Phase - Beck 228.8
15 (28). It's Album Time - Todd Terje 227.1
16 (20). Everyday Robots - Damon Albarn 220.7
17 (12). Turn Blue - The Black Keys 215.6
18 (36). Familiars - The Antlers 211.3
19 (14). Are We There - Sharon Van Etten 192.1
20 (19). Atlas - Real Estate 186.1

2013 would now look like this (albums released in 2013 and included in an overall chart last updated in 2013 excluded):
1 (1). Modern Vampires Of The City - Vampire Weekend 7025.7
2 (2) . Reflektor - Arcade Fire 6420.4
3 (3). Random Access Memories - Daft Punk 3737.6
4 (6). AM - Arctic Monkeys 3629.7
5 (4). Trouble Will Find Me - The National 3436.8
6 (7). ...Like Clockwork - Queens Of The Stone Age 3364.3
7 (5). Yeezus - Kanye West 3362.5
8 (8). m b v - My Bloody Valentine 1925.2
9 (12). Psychic - Darkside 1602.8
10 (10). Sunbather - Deafheaven 1531.1

If this is a fairer representation of how things should look, maybe this could become a permanent algorithm change. Thoughts?

Great idea! I'm all for this, just looking through the overall 2014 chart now you can see some albums that appear in less than 25 charts being above albums that appear in 60-70 charts due to their high positions on a couple of overall charts. I think a change would definitely bring a fairer overall view of the year.

I think it probably has a greater impact further down the chart. Like there's this Ben Vida album that's in the top 100, mostly because it's on my overall chart. Not trying to game it, it's sincere. But yeah, it would make way more sense for the albums that are in more charts to be higher.

That would definitely be the main reason to change things, so the overall picture more accurately reflects the collective opinion.

There'll obviously also be a smaller effect on the overall chart by making this change, but I'm not expecting any of the higher ranked albums to change places (a few albums will change position lower down). The overall chart top 100 would only change very slightly, so the algorithm change wouldn't have a huge impact outside the current year:

I do have a small problem with part of this...
Quote:
if albums from the current year & included in an overall chart updated in 2014 were excluded

Aren't most overall charts updated at least once a year? And wouldn't that mean most charts on BEA wouldn't count towards the rankings at all, since most people would've updated their chart in 2014?

I think you misunderstood this, it means that if an album released in 2014 makes it on to someone's overall chart, it won't count towards the rankings of the sites 2014 chart as it can result in shooting albums that have been on fewer charts up the list.

it's a brilliant idea, AM, but the best part of your calculations is that they don't reveal any obvious cheats. black keys is the biggest earner with a position 12 opposed to a #17. so happily we don't really need this, and that is something we all should congratulate each other for. well done everybody.

For the most part, yes, but I'd agree with you a lot more if the majority of the top 10 weren't in a different sequence (and 11-20 in an entirely different sequence).
