Apologies, we experienced another problem with our ISP today. They announced 15 minutes of downtime just half an hour before taking their network offline! To make things worse, they then decided that 15 minutes should become 4 hours. If it's any consolation, thousands of other websites were affected as well.

I'm deeply annoyed and apologise to anybody that was trying to access the site during that four hour period.

So who is to blame? Is it:
•Dreamhost.com ("DreamHost. Linux hosting, domain registration and dedicated servers. Located in Brea, California")
•Fasthosts.co.uk ("Fasthosts Internet Ltd. Reseller hosting, shared hosting, Windows 2003, and Linux web hosting. Supports ASP.NET, ASP, PHP, Perl and CGI. Also provides ADSL broadband with free migration")
•Co.uk ("If it was a subdomain, the domain would exist, but it doesn't")
    •NS2.DREAMHOST.COM
    •NS1.DREAMHOST.COM

Thinking of changing soon?

The problem was with DreamHost (hence the page I linked to), and yes, we are actively evaluating other hosts with a view to moving away from them.

One of my sites with good results:
Domain Name: RFNAPLESINSURANCE.COM
Registrar: ENOM, INC.
Whois Server: whois.enom.com
Referral URL: http://www.enom.com
Name Server: DNS1.NAME-SERVICES.COM
Name Server: DNS2.NAME-SERVICES.COM
Name Server: DNS3.NAME-SERVICES.COM
Name Server: DNS4.NAME-SERVICES.COM
Name Server: DNS5.NAME-SERVICES.COM

Name-services.com ("domain name registration register lookup at name-services.com. ENom, Inc. Domain name registration register lookup sex expired names look up") is a domain controlled by five name servers at name-services.com themselves. All five of them are on different IP networks. The primary name server is dns1.name-services.com.

Can't promise you will get equal results.

thanks, we're looking at a few options, mainly centred around dedicated servers which are very expensive (particularly for the database resources we use). The age old problem is trying to provide a good service whilst keeping control of the costs of delivering it.

Looks like BEA only has 2 name servers.

DNS assigns an IP address to the names of servers on the internet. It is advisable, to increase the availability of a website, to use several name servers. RFC2182, section 5, suggests to use a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 7 name servers. Sources and further information:

http://rfc.net/rfc2182.html and http://www.rfc-editor.org/

Edit: Try http://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc2182.txt

thanks RFNAPLES, we've now added a third nameserver (the DNS change will take about a day to propagate).

(EDIT: the original problem wasn't to do with the nameservers, there was a problem with our website hosting but there's no harm adding a third nameserver entry.)
