U2 is one of my favorite bands and has been since I started listening to music ten years ago. I discovered them after seeing the video of "All Because of You" on VH1. They were everything I wanted at the time, and so I started digging through their discography, especially War and Unforgettable Fire. I found myself listening to their newer stuff less and less, and now when I go back to this I get a bad taste in my mouth. They fall into bad tendencies that bloat up their music with a sense of self-importance, the musical representation of everything that is wrong with Rolling Stone magazine. It's dad rock going on grandpa rock, the holier-than-thou but still trying to be cool kind.
Bands age, and they'll reach a point where they no longer make great music, and imo U2 hit this mark with Pop. What ruins it for me is knowing all the elements that make their later stuff bad, because then I'll hear the seeds of these elements in their earlier albums. Joshua Tree is a great album, but if listened to after listening to this album then it comes off as bloated and self-important as well.

Some really good tracks ("Vertigo", "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own", "Yahweh", "City Of Blinding Lights"), but overall as an album is pretty mediocre.

This is a really interesting point, and I wonder if it is part of the reason I don't ever feel the need to explore even my favorite artists discogs after a certain point. Once bands become a parody of themselves, it's really easy to hear those parodying signature elements even in their earlier works even though those were the very elements that initially made them great and unique. It's all about dosage.
