My life won't be long enough to listen, read, watch and experience everything I like.

This saddens me.

I'm therefore pretty much biased when I pick something up, and I usually choose something I know I'll probably enjoy (from genres I like, charts I like Wink etc...).
Hence my pretty high ratings.

I don't have time to waste on stuff I don't like...

Well - looks like I'm feeling pretty low today... Sad

OK, here's a list of artists that I truly hate, and probably won't change:
*Lady Gaga
*Creed
*Brokencyde (I've listened to all three of their albums, in fact)
*Killswitch Engage
*Insane Clown Posse
*Manowar
*Def Leppard (at least Justin Bieber has better fashion sense than them)
*Slipknot
*Korn
*Almost any other cheap post-grunge/nu-metal

So I guess there's a good bit of music that I hate. BUT ITS NAWT ENOUGH.

Why would you do this to yourself?
(Why would you want to listen to stuff you know you'll hate)

Pushing yourself to listen to things you apparently don't like, can be a good thing sometime.
I rejected all the 60s music once but after some persistence and thanks to Hendrix and the Velvet Underground, i'm enjoying it more now. it's good to push your horizon a little bit further even if it's sometimes a waste of time (listened again to sgt. pepper's last time, still doesn't deserve more than 40/100).
statistically speaking, around 15% of albums i've heard got a rating under 50/100. which was not a total waste of time because some of them have some great individual songs (exp: Blue Lines, Dummy, Simple Things by Zero 7...etc)

every now and then I get a little masochistic and see if I can get past minute two of any Twin Infinitives (Royal Trux) song, just to see if it's grown on me. it never has. And seriously, I enjoy noise, even MMM

Why? Because I enjoy panning things. I'm a natural critic. Ironically, their debut album, The Broken, was their best album, getting a whole 4.0 out of 10 Surprised

Anyway, to bring my point home, I listened to Justin Bieber last night just to make fun of him, but I've realized how catchy some of his beats are.

I listen to an album in its entirety at least once and usually much more before rating it. Therefore, most of the albums I rate are at least a 65. There are lots of artists and albums I don't like, won't listen to or don't finish listening to and therefore don't rate. So much good music too little time!

Two albums highly rated on BEA but not to my taste are Neutral Milk Hotel's In The Aeroplane Over The Sea and Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion.

With Neutral Milk Hotel, I could see the appeal to some listeners but I don't think it is something that I would listen to by chance. Animal Collective is also similar. I tried to listen to MPP because of the acclaim it received here. But even now if I hear 'My Girls' or 'Summertime Clothes' I can't listen to the whole song.

But these aren't the worst I have heard. I haven't heard everything yet Smile

Some people do need a good warning. This is how I felt with Vampire Weekend's Contra. never have I been more confused as to how someone could like an album. Just awful.

This is perfect. I saw this topic and came here specifically to mention Vampire Weekend. I know a handful of people with decent taste in music whom love it, but I can't handle how much I hate it. Gave it a couple listens too but no dice.

What I hate about myself is brushing aside potentially good music because I don't trust the person recommending it to me. I wish some of my friends were better sources. It seems for every the xx and Sleigh Bells there's another Vampire Weekend or Gogol Bordello.
