They were active in the 80's and 90's making lots of rly dark music that was like rock shiz and a lot of the reverb sounds kind of silly now and then the head guy was like "man this is kind of dark" so then he went off and did his own thing called angels of light to make up for it by making less dark stuff and then he was all like "hey, that's enough of that" so swans got back together, but it was the future now so the reverb didn't sound silly, and so everyone was like "hey this sounds pretty good", and we have the internet now and so ppl talk about them now.

Definitely the best answer so far, but I'm with OP. Can anyone give any comments on technique or intention that will give me a perspective on why it resonates with so many people that it would have 2 top 10 albums of the year on the site. Even if they are your opinions I'd like to hear someone describe how this music makes them feel on a positive level.

People listen to Swans for the same reason people watch horror movies, only Swans is a whole lot fucking scarier.

Their albums are definitely more of an experience if anything. They do a great job at making a sound that completely overwhelms you with fear. I love it.

They do focus on repetition, which can be a hit or miss with some people.

In the right mindset Swans make the best music I've ever heard.

PS I'm considering going to see Swans in London UK (camden roundhouse) on Thurs 21st May.
I cannot convince any of my friends to join me.

Why don't we UK peeps organise a meet up??

please think about this I'd love to do it!

Here's the link: http://www.roundhouse.org.uk/whats-on/2015/swans/

I know you're pretty anti-Swans for the most part, and yeah Seer is kind of funny at times, but like I really dig them and still don't get the whole scary stuff. I mean, it's certainly dark, but there's nothing as haunting as say, Frankie Teardrop on any of their records. Plus I just don't get a physical sensation of fear from almost any music.

I mean fuck, Filth makes great exercise music.
