I cannot express the amount of love and admiration I have for this masterpiece. It's quaint and restrictive, yet biting and unapologetic. Visceral dialogue coming out the mouth of a mature introvert. It's that kind of portrayal of sadness that's painful yet you have to plough through it to make it out okay. It's so influential to me. I can't see myself without it.

Really marvelous record. It's influence is still felt. I hear Elliott all over the latest Sufjan album, for example.

It's just up there as one of the most raw, insular, and emotive minimalist indie folk records ever made.

Best Elliott album, easily. Although I'd argue it has the least amazing highs of all his albums, it is very easily his most consistent work. Alphabet Town, Clementine and The Biggest Lie are all career standouts.

It's good, but not one of my favorites

I'm not a massive fan of this man, but he can play an alright tune.

I recently got deep into this tragically beautiful album, absolutely fantastic. There are lots of subtle touches that I adore, like Christian Brothers being about his nightmares, then the next song (Clementine) starting with him waking up. Similarly in Alphabet Town, where the last verse has 'I'm ready to go out' and the next song is the amazing St. Ides Heaven (probably my favourite off the album).

The only thing I didn't really get was what 'the biggest lie' was, anyone know?

My favourite Elliott Smith album. Totally bleak, totally raw, and without any of the fancy production of his later stuff which makes it feel all the more raw. 'Insular' was also a very accurate way to describe it. I love it

The musical equivalent of JD Salinger's masterful novel The Catcher in the Rye as well as the greatest piece of music ever released for me. Totally important for me and often my development as a person. Subtle beauty with the voice of a wispy angel.
