Sure. Movies tend to be way more controversial than source novels, so it'll be interesting to see how it goes over if it gets at least a major arthouse release. |
I'm near certain it's going to win.
Minimal-dialogue screenplay, with this b/w horror-gorgeous Bela Tarr/Diaz/Tarkovsky/Vlacil vibe, stellar cast, massive walkouts, bloated runtime, super provocative, controversial, bleak, the 'seriousness' juries look for. It'll be a major player. Could be a little awkward for Venice to give their top prize to a black and white film for the third time in four years, but I can still see it happening.
If you haven't watched the trailer, or at least had a look at some of the stills, please do. Beautiful cinematography. Even people who hated it are calling it visually stunning.
If it doesn't win, I'd say Marriage Story has a pretty good chance.

In a slight shock, Joker just won the Golden Lion at Venice.
Which, if the last few years have anything to say, I'm pretty sure means it could snag Best Picture.
Super hyped to see this...
Little odd seeing Todd Phillips' name among the previous winners of... since ever, but yeah.

A couple of the bad reviews of Joker have confirmed what I figured were it's flaws, so I don't know if I can believe the hype. I want it to be good, but I've been burned too many times.
The latest DC animated Batman film based on the great "Hush" comic was pretty good though.

Joker might be too controversial to win Best Picture. Obviously Phoenix has a serious shot at Best Actor.
So many reviews reference King of Comedy and Taxi Driver there seems to be some consensus that it's somewhat derivative (though if you're going to imitate films, you can't do much better than those two). But art (assuming it is art) needs to be experienced to be judged.

Three or four there for me to put in the queue. Appreciate it. Parasite really is something... have you seen its Letterboxd rating? Crazy. Might go down in an all-time best of tier.
I've started my decade list, but I don't plan on finishing it before February-March. I pretty much know the top 10, but there's still way too much I want to see first (2019 is insane). Think I'll round it out at 150. None of my top 5 are on your list, but no hard feelings. Plenty on there that'll be on mine.
Hoping other users compile lists. Definitely hoping for a decade poll

Yoo Hayden and the rest of movie fans. It's Ljubljana film festival time, I'll probably go see some (max 6, probably less) movies, can you take a look at that link and let me know what you recommend / have already seen and you thought it was great.
