Have you ever learnt or discovered something about your favourite albums that just makes you love them even more?
Most of you know I love Common's 'Like Water For Chocolate', but it was only a few weeks ago I discovered there were two versions of Geto Heaven Pt. 2, the more popular remix with Macy Gray, and the original version featuring D'Angelo, which I found a little tricky to find. Being a huge fan of D'Angelo, it was a big discovery that I'd been listening to the alternative version of the album this whole time, and the track went from being one of the cheesier songs on the album to being possibly even my favourite. It really changes the entire tone and feeling of the ending to something more reflective and subtle, and I think because of that it's easily the superior album version. Make sure you grab the original album version if you're going to give it a shot.
I recently discovered that Hospice (which is currently my number 1) has alternate track names which makes it even more horrifying, which definitely makes me like it even more.
Also Everyday robots gets better with every listen, I don't necessarily notice anything different each time, but I enjoy it more with each listen.
not an album, not even necessarily even an absolute favorite but I find it pretty crazy cool what I realized El-P did on his verse on the remix of Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire's "The Last Huzzah"
It sounds cool already, but eventually I noticed he's actually numbering each bar on his verse (starting with "Three" on the second bar because he deliberately doesn't mention 13 where it normally would be, because tridecaphobia and hotel elevators and whatnot. Damn.)
Straight shots of the sterno plus, wick stuck in the bottle empty
Three blocks to the target we lit it and lob it hard at Sentry
Four pigs of the oinking variety guard the market entry
Five minutes of flames and then aim the whistle my father lent me
Six o'clock we meet up and divvy the shells among the youngins
Seven continents in the shit and smoke like it's fuckin London
Just before they ate up the funds our harmony love was bumping
Now government issue nines and point em where your blood is pumping
Tend to mop up these muttering zombies talker pieces
El'll vent on you harder than Fukushima breezes
In the end when a dozen or so ajourn to reason
You'll find the verdict return corrupted in murderous seasons
With inverted 31's and other unlucky omens
Thats why I chug 7 and 7's til I'm fucking homeless
And every time you think my fifteen minutes of fame are up
I'll spit another sixteen to prove to the world I fucking own it
Was just talking about this in plug, but I'm pretty sure the second half of this video (i.e. the dub version) is accidentally played at 33 instead of 45, and it turns an already fantastic song into this gorgeous, oceanic piece of quasi-ambient music that recalls Gavin Bryars' 'The Sinking of the Titanic', and it's amazing.
EDIT: This video, starts at 4:11. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.
Reading the 33 1/3 on Spiderland showed me just how much work went into the crafting of the album, which becomes really clear when you relisten with that in mind. It really is impeccable. _________________

Have you seen this? Definitely put the album in a new perspective for me, and a very well-made doc. Recommended watch for sure.
