- Post subject: How'd Y'all Like a Best Classical Work Tournament?
|
I've been talking to DBZ about this a bit, and I think it'd be fun. We'd take all our favorite classical works (any recording of them is fine) and pit them against each other. Each person would have 5-10 noms, though there would be a limit for one work per composer per user.
Does this sound like fun to you guys? I think this could be really great, but I want to make sure that we don't only vote for the famous stuff like The Four Seasons or The Disintegration Loops

Define classical.
Also wouldn't this be a lot of listening? I think if it was one matchup per week maybe, with fewer nominations, and maybe some kind of group listening sessions on plug or mixlr to try to get as many people to hear the works in their entirety, then maybe that would help the lesser known ones get further.

5-10 noms per user? That sounds like a huge tournament. I like the concept, but only if it's much smaller, since I'm not likely to have heard most of what's nominated. Secretdad's suggestions sound good too.

Tournaments are about what you not heard.

I agree, that's why I think a big tournament would be unmanageable.

Bigger tournaments mean more music you may not heard before

If the listening load is too heavy, my tendency is to just give up and not participate. I certainly won't vote in matches unless I've heard both recordings. And while it's nice to go back to tournaments for recs, I enjoy them a lot more if I can participate as they're happening.

I could lower the number of noms if you guys think it would be better. It's just that I didn't know how many of you guys would have recs outside of the basic Music Nerd Canon.
Also, works can have a wide range of lengths. Some of them are 3-6 minutes like 4'33", others are six hours. I thought that range would make it a lot more fun than just doing classical albums.
Also, I define "classical music" as anything RYM puts under that umbrella. If a work isn't listed as a "work" on RYM, it can still be counted if it has the overall "classical music" tag on an album.

If you really want to do the esoteric thing, you could have a BEA or RYM rank cutoff.

People putting in what they want will be a good idea.
