Last time I did this I was looking to get into Jazz, and now I'm looking to get into a genre I'm even less educated on. Literally the only soul album I have is "Call Me" by Al Green and I'm looking to change that. Any suggestions?

I have a music chart on the subject some time ago, it might need a tiny bit of editing but it still reflects my favorites in the style.

Sorry for bringing etymology into the conversation but I usually use soul to describe the music under the R&B umbrella from the 60s and 70s, and a lot of other people do as well. I'm still unsure of where to place R&B in the 80s like Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. The late 80s saw the short existence of new jack swing, which was 80s R&B with hip-hop beats. And most R&B after that is generally considered contemporary R&B. Before soul, there were several movements such as doo-wop and R&B proper. Also, funk developed out of soul and had a similar timeline to it.

Unfortunately a lot these genres have advanced through singles more than through albums but I can name some soul albums that come to mind that are good for starters:

What's Going On by Marvin Gaye

Let's Get It On by Marvin Gaye

Innervisions by Stevie Wonder

Songs In The Key Of Life by Stevie Wonder

I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You ...a Franklin

Otis Blue / Otis Redding Sings Soul by Otis Redding

Off The Wall by Michael Jackson

Ah I love soul. I've got a chart I've been working on, should be done probably this week.

Here are some of my favorites:

Night Beat by Sam Cooke

I think Sam Cooke has one of the most beautiful, pure voices in soul music, and this album is just him and a band doing some tunes. There's not attempt at making a big hit or anything, it's just simply Sam Cooke doing Sam Cooke and it's incredible.

The Baby Huey Story: The Living Legend by Baby Huey

I never thought that anyone could ever match Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come", and then I heard Baby Huey do it, and I really had to rethink that.

You Got My Mind Messed Up by James Carr

Here, My Dear by Marvin Gaye

My personal favorite Gaye album, better than (just barely) Let's Get It On and What's Goin' On, in my opinion (though those two are obviously necessities in soul music listening)

The Iceman Cometh by Jerry Butler

"Lost" is one of my favorite soul songs of the entire decade, and that's just the beginning of how good this album is.

Them Changes by Buddy Miles

This Is My Country by The Impressions

A Man Needs A Woman by James Carr

Pieces Of A Man by Gil Scott-Heron

The Exciting Wilson Pickett by Wilson Pickett

So yea, those are ten of my favorites (that haven't been mentioned) that I would highly highly recommend.
