The defining American indie band of the 80s or the defining British band of the 80's? I'd go with the Smiths, sounded cool whilst being very British, some of the best lyrics I've ever heard from the brilliant Morrisey and Marrs guitar playing is amazing. Also I like the brutual honesty and if you were a bit of a outkast, loner etc you could relate to it haha

REMs stuff is alright could never really get into it though.

REM by a long shot. Morissey was just annoying, while REM was revolutionary. They were one of few bands that truly acted as a unit.

OK, I hate you for this poll. I love both those bands with a fierce passion. My relationship with both of those bands is quite personal and both have meant the world to me over the years. Basically, you're talking about the two bands of the 80's that more or less defined my formative years. Shit! Both bands shaped my identity and greatly influenced how I perceive the world around me. It's like asking which arm I want to keep. It's very hard to choose. That said, my answer might surprise you, given my chosen moniker. If I could only listen to one of those bands the rest of my life, it would be R.E.M.

I'd go with The Smiths because most of the time, when I listen to REM I find myself forcing to because everybody says there so good. I like REM enough to have Reckoning in my chart, but give me any smiths album and I'll listen to the whole thing front to back.

Because of my great love for Murmur I have to vote for R.E.M. However, most of The Smiths' discography tops R.E.M.'s, I think.
