Interesting because I would say that about the Smiths!!! I mean I like some of their stuff, but so far it hasn't grabbed me in- might be it didn't age as well as R.E.M. and I was born in 84, so I remember it, but it more a memory than first hand experience.

The Smiths split up in 1987 when you were barely 3 .... that is one POWERFUL memory you've got there Seth... Confused

The Smiths without a doubt, but then again they're probably my favourite band of all time! I love REM as well, but they should have split up about 15 years earlier. Two great bands.

The Smiths. On the whole, better music, and better lyrics, even if REM have their great moments.

I remember my older siblings listening to it as a I got older, whereas with R.E.M. I was cognizant of their music as it came out, and then could attach myself to things that came out before- couldn't do that with the Smiths. Generation Gap is probably a better way to explain it.

I find The Smiths are more single based than R.E.M.

Agreed. A great quality of R.E.M. is they make great complete albums, especially in the 90's.
