I started to write this in Jim's HiFi/Headphones thread, but I didnt wanna hijack it so i posted a new one.

I'm in the infant stages of building a system for my record collection. My idea is to build and replace piece by piece over time so I'm not dropping an exuberant amount of money up front.

Currently, I have a pair of Bose Companion IIs connected to a basic Audio-Technica turntable and an old pair of sony over ear headphones. And that is literally it.

I'm only just now getting in to this as a hobby and haven't quite yet figured out what im doing.

What should be my next purchase and why? Remember I'm looking to build on my system a piece at a time so maybe in 5 years or so I can have something I'll be proud of.

As always i greatly appreciate the communities help.

You're going to need a few things to get going. But basically you'll need...

1. An amplifier (you can pick one of these up for less than $60 dollars 2nd hand)
2. Speakers - I suggest spending a bit here but again the 2nd hand market can be your friend.
3. If your amp doesn't have a phono stage (many don't) then you'll also need to buy phono pre-amp.
4. speaker wire & interconnects

That's pretty much it, as for makes etc it depends on your budget. If like me you're happy at the lower/mid end for amplifiers then Pioneer, Marantz, Denon, Cambridge etc are fine

Go for a decent brand for your speakers and do some research as to what will suit the power of your amp. Do you want floor standers or bookshelf speakers? Basically the bigger the speaker the more powerful amp you need to drive them. I have B&W 601 S2 speakers and have been really happy with them.

Thanks LittleM,

An amp was going to be my next purchase, but I'm not sure what i should be looking for. especially in terms of features and usefulness as I upgrade the set up
