Fair cop. I always have difficulty separating statements about "this site" from statements about "the forum," just because I feel like it's already pretty straightforward that most of the non-forum users on the site tend towards rockism, at least in my experience. I agree those metrics make Dr. Dre underrated, and I agree that apples to apples comparisons against rappers like Kanye and Kendrick betray the skew of how many users actually take hip hop seriously on the site and once again what the demography of those who do is. In the context of the forums, however, I was baffled. And no, I don't equate wealth with talent at all, but it's hard for me to find someone underrated when they have made literally billions based on their image that originally came from making music that was critically well-received as well.

Fair enough. I guess we're on the same page then Laughing And you're right. Rap tends to be vastly underrated on this site, something that is changing little by little, fortunately. A few years ago it was impossible to find a rap album anywhere near the top 100, with the disputable exception of Rage Against the Machine (if you count them as a rap band). Now there are two, with Kendrick on his way to crack into it as well with maybe two of his releases.

By the way, I might be wrong about this, but I think right now Dr. Dre is the wealthiest person in the hip hop industry after his deal with Apple.

I'd vouch that Red House Painters didn't get their due share in their time (assuming.. I wasn't alive...)

I was, and they were pretty popular among hip student communities even here in France.

Keiji Haino/Fushitsusha's 90s output is absolutely fantastic and I don't see it getting talked about much...

Im gonna throw Uncle Tupelo out there. They had a bit of commercial success but broke up after their major label debut, (and subsequently created Wilco and Son Volt). Anodyne is one of my favorite albums of all time, but all of their stuff is great.

Blenderhead - Blenderhead

Squad 5-0 - Fight The System

This is just about as underground as it gets. Some LA vibes from the mid-late 90's

Another band worth acknowledging from that decade that I didn't mention earlier is the country band named Shenandoah. They are who introduced me to my one of my most favorite female singers when releasing their song named "Somewhere In The Vicinity Of The Heart" in 1994. Smile Smile Smile

God bless you and them and Alison Krauss always!!! Smile Smile Smile
