- Post subject: Rank The Director (Coen Brothers)
|
We did this a while back, but never followed through with a second version. Figured I'd set it up.
In the last poll (found here), BEA ranked Kubrick's filmography, and it went fairly well. I'll be using the format I used to rank the other polls I've done in order to get the final results.
First up, the Coen Brothers
Eligible films:
Blood Simple (1984)
Raising Arizona (1987)
Miller's Crossing (1990)
Barton Fink (1991)
The Hudsucker Proxy (1994)
Fargo (1996)
The Big Lebowski (1998)
O Brother Where Art Thou? (2000)
The Man Who Wasn't There (2001)
Intolerable Cruelty (2003)
The Lady Killers (2004)
No Country For Old Men (2007)
Burn After Reading (2008)
A Serious Man (2009)
True Grit (2010)
Inside Llewyn Davis (2013)
Ineligible:
Crimewave (1985)
The Naked Man (1998)
Paris Je T'aime (2006)
Chacun Son Cinema (2007)
Gambit (2012)
Hail, Caesar! (2016)

Voted for The Coens purely because I've been binging on them lately, most recently Miller's Crossing. _________________

Who would I be if I wasn't here backing Woody Allen! Not me, for a start.
Quite an easy choice for me, too. The Coens and Wes Anderson have both directed one of my favouritest films, but Allen has directed about 5 of them. _________________

Shame on me, but I haven't seen enough Bergman, Godard, or Tarkovsky to participate. Need to remedy that. Also, I couldn't care less about Linklater. Nothing against his films, which I generally enjoy to some extent (and occasionally love), but I have zero interest in ranking them - meh. Feel a pretty similar way about Wes Anderson. Fincher's an interesting one, because I often dislike his films, they leave me cold, but it would be quite interesting to see which one people think is best (clue: it's Zodiac). But anyway, voted for the Coens because I think their filmography contains a cool variety of styles and genres, and is long enough to make it interesting. _________________ 2021 in full effect. It looks like this is going to be fairly divided, so perhaps 7 votes is a bit high We'll make it first to 6.
Due to lack of interest, I'm also going to take Hitchcock out of the equation.
EDIT: Turns out you can't edit polls. Ok then.

More interested in Hitchcock than any other.
Also, these are the directors whose filmo I won't be able to rank:
Tarkovsky (only seen 1)
Linklater (only seen 2)
David Fincher (only seen 3, with only 1 good among the lot)

I'm nowhere near watching the whole filmography of all of these guys, esp. Hitchcock. I haven't watched some of his most famous stuff actually. I've loved everything I've seen by Bergman, esp. Wild Strawberries which I watched about a month ago and loved even more than the seventh seal, but I've seen like 3 or 4 of his movies. I've watched most of Ceon brother's stuff; I'm completely illiterate about Woody Allen though (Annie Hall and Midnight in Paris and that's it; what should I watch next?). I can do Tarkovsky though so I vote for that. _________________ "I feel like for the last two years there’s been sort of a sonic evolution happening and I’ve been experimenting more and more."
