Give me recommendations!

I probably won't write about everything that I listen to.

Most of these write ups will just be ramblings that come to mind whilst listening to whatever I'm listening to.

side note: apparently on my old account i was super fake and enigmatic, let's try to change that here Smile

Home, Like Noplace Is There by The Hotelier

Along with Whenever, If Ever, this album has really brought the whole spirit of the Midwest Emo scene to life for me. These albums make me feel like I want to be with people and not in this solitary, self-centered mindset that I often have. When I'm not listening to new albums or Drake, I'm usually listening to albums from this area of music.

Nothing from 2014 really hit as hard as this:

"So if I call,
should I beg?
Because I'm desperate here;
a couple steps from the edge.
I can't seem to burn bright enough.
I'm cold and I'm left alone.
We're all alone.
Grab a hold.
I know I said to not. What the fuck do I know?
I had a chance to construct something beautiful and I choked."

I'm not one to really be into lyrics all that much, but when someone can write lyrics that bring me to a land called nostalgia, it starts to "make sense".

Everything about the emotion poured into and out of this album is just raw. The dynamic contrast is great, the aesthetic fits, and everything else. I couldn't really pick a favorite track, but if I had to give someone a place to start I would pick "Among The Wildflowers" due to how beautiful the delivery is.

"Dissociate from touch.
You’re tilting to pull the others with you.
Posed shakespearean skull, we see in different pictures.
You play the imperial
stealing the power to waste away.
You took the comfort from the lights in her soul.
Projected map of the body:
it's crass, abject, colonial.
You passed dis-ease presented to you at birth.
Held underwater told to scream your self worth.
It wasn’t good enough.
Entrust the secrets to the backs of your arms.
Killing the self as to protect it from harm."

It's always nice to let your emotions out to an album.

I saw Sufjan Stevens last night, and that had to be one of the best shows, if not the best, that I have been to. Naturally, I had to give Carrie & Lowell another listen. Seeing him live definitely brought the album up for me as I expect it to be on my overall soon. Not many albums really move me, but this is one that puts me in another world from beginning to end.

Listened to Art Angels by Grimes after the Suf, and really liked that. It's definitely a lot more dance-oriented than her previous work which is welcomed by me.

Right after that I finished up Darling Arithmetic by Villagers which really just felt right. Extremely enjoyable and comfortable listen. I couldn't ask for much more for a walk on a Saturday morning in November.

Just finished my first listen to Etch And Etch Deep by Haiku Salut which is a mixture of art pop and folktronica with a dash of drum x bass. Definitely a solid, twinkly album, but not one that I see myself listening to much in the future. There's definitely a lot of potential here, though, so I'll be on the lookout for future releases.

Recently started Tomorrow Will Be Beautiful by Flo Morrissey! Her voice is super pretty and fun.

I listened to Divers yesterday, and it's definitely my favorite Newsom project to date. I don't have any clear favorite tracks, but the whole listen is just super majestic.

Currently updating my chart to a full 100 entries and listening to

Zamknęły Się Oczy Ziemi by Stara Rzeka

Looooving this, great psychedelic folk

As someone who likes The Hotelier (seeing them tonight, actually), I gotta say they don't even come close to Tiny Moving Parts. You should definitely check this album:

Pleasant Living by Tiny Moving Parts

It's basically just the Hotelier with a slightly cleaner vocalist and only one guitarist and way more bittersweet, optimistic, wonderful lyrics. Those are good but take for example:

"The what-if's are killing me,
keeping me awake
I lie to myself, but my heart's too smart
to be tricked by my brain
I'm not okay (I'm not)
But I will be someday (I'm strong)
But I'm wounded"

"I want to tell you how I feel
But I don't want to make you feel
Like it's your fault for leaving me at all
But this won't change the way I look at you
This will change how I sleep
I wish I would have cherished it
You used to keep me warm
Now my warmth comes from embarrassment"

"Simply put, life can't not be defined it can't be simply put
But you gotta do your best 'cuz nobody forgets the things that they regret
There's no rewind and I should have kept that in mind
But on the bright side I'd say I prefer sadness over spineless anyway"

"Don't let the cloud of dust settle in your lungs
Or the hourglass begin to run out
Let's make sand castles while we can
Cause we'll age and then someday
We will look back and say
What ravishing lives that we lived
What fascinating places we went"

"I lost connection with all of my best friends
I wanted to feel the sensation of cutting the cord
Regrets they present from the past inside of my head
I can only imagine a breath of fresh air
Life has too many entrances & exits
Well, maybe, they're not so different after all."

"Take me back to the first day of class
It was freshman year in mathematics
You sat in the front as I stood in the back
I was too nervous to ask anybody around me
What your name was
So I bit my tongue
(And I swallowed the words that I should have said)
But never did because you thought that I would make it worse
(You were a risk)"

That's just some of the best off that album. It's a real masterpiece.

Not from 2014, but here's some other emo that's pretty damn hard hitting:

Oooo, I've listened to This Couch Is Long & Full of Friendship and really liked that, will give it a shot!

Finished the Rzeka, now onto some good ol' black metal with Mgla's Exercises In Futility.

You've surely listened to the 2013 Stara Rzeka, right Gav?

Also, have you listened to much can Type O Negative? I'm curious to see what you'd think of Slow Deep & Hard.

I need to get on the 2013 release, and I've listened to one or two releases from Type O Negative! Very Happy

Really enjoyed the Mgla album! Great, semi-melodic black metal.

After that, I listened to Söngvar elds og óreiðu by Misþyrming which is black metal with bits of dark ambiance, but it's not too like Burzum. Everything is pretty low in the mix, so it's not tearing at your ears when you're listening to it. Definitely liked this.

The Ride Majestic by Soilwork came next! Saw the melodeath tag on rym, and thought that I would be listening to At The Gates/Amon Amarth worship, but what I got happened to be a little too many influences from straight heavy metal. It was alright, but nothing that I will probably revisit.

Finished up Ausserwelt by Year Of No Light which is atmospheric sludge metal and post-rock, kind of like a mix of Isis and Neurosis, but it's not as good as what both of those artists usually bring to the table. Now, this is no real slap on the band, it's still a fine listen, I was just hoping for a little more.

Next up is a key 2015 release for screamo with Atheist's Cornea by Envy! Envy definitely put out one of the more diverse screamo records this year with their blend of post-rock (violins, too!) and their brand of good ol' skramz.

Now time for a record that left me a little dry. Rustie's EVENIFUDONTBELIEVE had so much riding with it after his lackluster sophomore LP, but nothing that great really came through here. His debut, Glass Swords is an all-time favorite of mine so seeing him drop off like this isn't too fun.

Just finished up Palmistry's Lil Gem EP which is a great piece of hazy, alternative r&b. Think Spooky Black meets How To Dress Well. Any of you who know me probably know that this is what I usually consider to be my favorite genre, so loving this wasn't a surprise.

Now I'm on

Still Bummed by Nouns

which seems to be a great fusion of noise pop, midwest emo, post-hardcore, and indie rock! I'll be back later with my thoughts on this.

Ended up really digging that Nouns album. Reminded me of a ton of artists that I really dig (i.e. Cap'n Jazz, Sleigh Bells, and even Xiu Xiu and Crying at times), but they definitely have their own sound.

After joking around with some of my friends about getting into harsh noise, I decided that I would kick off with a "regular noise" album, one that has seen its acclaim here in 2015.

Frozen Niagara Falls by Prurient

Ended up loving this, so many moments had me going "wow, if this is what the whole idea of 'music is dead' is like, i'm alright with that."

After that, I listened to the new album from one of my favorite artists, Thy Catafalque, called Sgùrr. This is definitely in my top 2 or 3 TC releases due to its sheer beauty. Everything about this record screams, or whispers, subtle atmosphere. Definitely recommended to DBZ, Gowi, Rocky, and Skinny.

Doing a few papers for school in the mid-morning, going through the RYM 2015 chart and I see that Panopticon are at #9. Immediately I created the playlist on Spotify and pressed play. From the second it started I was in love. Will come back with thoughts later, but I can already see this album being something incredibly special.
