Jackson Browne by Jackson Browne

JACKSON BROWNE
1972-ASYLUM
Produced By RICHARD SANFORD ORSHOFF

1. Jamaica Say You Will
2. A Child In These Hills
3. Song For Adam
4. Doctor My Eyes
5. From Silver Lake
6. Something Fine
7. Under The Falling Sky
8. Looking Into You
9. Rock Me On The Water
10. My Opening Farewell

Jackson Browne's debut album is sometimes called Saturate Befopre Using because the words appear at the top of the album cover, but the official title is Jackson Browne. His debut album contains some very beautiful moments, but also some forgettable ones.

There are exactly four songs that make this worthwhile: "Jamaica Say You Will" is the song that got David Geffen's attention and eventually led to the start of Asylum Records. "Song For Adam" is simply beautiful. "Doctor My Eyes" was his first hit, and rightfully so. And "Rock Me On The Water" ranks among his finest songs ever, and has held up the best of any of his earliest material. Browne would go on to make much better albums than this in the 70's, but if you're a fan, you'll want this as well.

My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts by Brian ...avid Byrne

BRIAN ENO & DAVID BYRNE
MY LIFE IN THE BUSH OF GHOSTS
1981-SIRE
Produced By BRIAN ENO & DAVID BYRNE

1. America Is Waiting
2. Mea Culpa
3. Regiment
4. Help Me Somebody
5. The Jezebel Spirit
6. Very, Very Hungry
7. Moonlight In Glory
8. The Carrier
9. A Secret Life
10. Come With Us
11. Mountain Of Needles

You would think that the pairing of two of rock's biggest eccentrics would result in something unlistenable. But former Roxy Music keyboardist Brian Eno and Talking Heads frontman David Byrne combine their musical obsessions into something much more accessible than you would think, and something that was, in 1981, an unknown journey into world music.

Not that this is in any way a pop album. But Eno and Byrne create accessible songs here, with Byrne's love of African rhythms complimented by Eno's eccentric noise. It doesn't work on every track, but when it does, you'll find the mixture more than satisfying.

Harvest For The World by The Isley Brothers

THE ISLEY BROTHERS
HARVEST FOR THE WORLD
1976-T-NECK
Produced By THE ISLEY BROTHERS

1. Harvest For The World (Prelude)
2. Harvest For The World
3. People Of Today
4. Who Loves You Better
5. (At Your Best) You Are Love
6. Let Me Down Easy
7. So You Wanna Stay Down
8. You Still Feel The Need
9. Summer Breeze (Live)

The first family of funk. The Isley Brothers had already had huge success by the time of Harvest For The World. The album, with the hit "Who Loves You Better", sold over 500,000 copies in 3 weeks, making it one of the fastest selling albums of all time. All but forgotten now, which is a pity, because the Isley's brought the funk the right way. Led by Ernie Isley, who not only supplied some of the greatest funk guitar licks ever played, but who also played all of the drum tracks, the band was on fire. And the result was an album of near perfection.

The Isley Brothers are one of the longest lasting bands in history, having put out their debut album in 1959 and their most recent in 2017. Harvest For The World is from their peak period, and should not be missed by anyone who enjoys funk.

The Rutles Archaeology by The Rutles

THE RUTLES
ARCHAEOLOGY
1996-VIRGIN
Produced By NEIL INNES & STEVE JAMES

1. Major Happy's Up And Coming Once Upon A Good Time Band
2. Rendzvous
3. Questionnaire
4. We've Arrived! (And To Prove It We're Here)
5. Lonely-Phobia
6. Unfinished Words
7. Hey Mister!
8. Easy Listening
9. Now She's Left You
10. The Knicker Elastic King
11. I Love You
12. Eine Kleine Middle Klasse Musik
13. Joe Public
14. Shangri-La
15. Don't Know Why
16. Back In '64

The Rutles were originally conceived by Eric Idle as a Monty Python sketch. It went over so well that it became a "documentary" called All You Need Is Cash. The concept? The Rutles are a straight out parody of The Beatles...and you won't find a better one. The parts of Lennon, Harrison and Starr were played by actual musicians, while Idle portrayed the Paul McCartney character Dirk McQuigley. Years later, when The Beatles released the Anthology series, The Rutles were dusted off for this album of "rare tracks".

It's pretty silly stuff, but it's also a lot of fun...mostly in piecing together which Beatles song ties to which Rutles song. The best of the lot is "Shangri-La", which ends with a mind numbing parody of the end of "Hey Jude" (La-de-do-da, La-de-da, Here we are in Shangri-La). It's all fun, and while not as complete without the visual the original album had, still worth a chuckle.

Violent Femmes by Violent Femmes

VIOLENT FEMMES
1982-SLASH
Produced By MARK VAN HECKE

1. Blister In The Sun
2. Kiss Off
3. Please Do Not Go
4. Add It Up
5. Confessions
6. Prove My Love
7. Promise
8. To The Kill
9. Gone Daddy Gone
10. Good Feeling
11. Ugly
12. Gimme The Car

The true acoustic punk band didn't exist until Violent Femmes quietly released their debut album in 1982. Then slowly, over the course of ten years, it sold until it had reached sales of one million without ever appearing on a chart. The word of mouth campaign was built mostly around the song "Blister In The Sun", but there's actually plenty of other good reasons to have this album. Singer Gordon Gano and his snot-nosed delivery guides you through a set of surprisingly good songs like "Kiss Off" and "Add It Up". One of the later bonus trackls, "Gimme The Car", turned out to be an excellent bonus as well.

Alas, the formula never worked as well again, although the Femmes have made some decent music over the years. But the best by far is still the first. A punk album that's actually underrated. Who would have thought?

I mostly agree with most of this review, but am confused by this one line. Do you think most punk albums are overrated?

Also Hallowed Ground - their sophomore album is every bit as good as this one. Just different. Both are five star essential albums.

3. Rock & Roll (Demo)
4. Cool It Down (Early Version)
5. New Age (Full Length Version)
6. Head Held High (Early Version)

16. Sad Song (Demo)
17. Love Makes You Feel Ten Feet Tall (Demo)

This desecration of Loaded (an excellent album by The Velvet Underground) is something there should be no excuse for. This is a record label doing a repackaging of an album, including all of the garbage that was never intended to be released, and selling it for twice the price because it took two discs to fit everything. Absolutely appalling.

The original album is here, but so is an alternate version with inferior versions, and a scrap load of crappy demos and outtakes. Go buy Loaded. Single disc. No one needs the other crap they shamelessly added to this.

More Than A New Discovery by Laura Nyro

LAURA NYRO
THE FIRST SONGS
1973-COLUMBIA
Produced By MILT OKIN

1. Wedding Bell Blues
2. Billy's Blues
3. California Shoeshine Boys
4. Blowing Away
5. Lazy Susan
6. Good By Joe
7. Flim Flam Man
8. Stoney End
9. I Never Meant To Hurt You
10. He's A Runner
11. Buy And Sell
12. And When I Die

The First Songs is actually the debut album from Laura Nyro, originally called More Than A New Discovery, with a different track order and new packaging. Recorded in 1966, when Nyro was just 18, the album is flowing with hit songs...for other artists. "Wedding Bell Blues" and "Blowin' Away" were hits for The Fifth Dimension, "And When I Die" for Blood, Sweat, and Tears, and "Stoney End" for Barbra Streisand.

But Nyro's versions, while not hits, have their own merit. At 18, she was already an accomplished writer with a flair for the unexpected turn. As always, with Nyro, this album is an acquired taste, but well worth the work it takes to get her style.

Car Wheels On A Gravel Road by Lucinda Williams

LUCINDA WILLIAMS
CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD
1998-MERCURY
Produced By RAY KENNEDY, STEVE EARLE, ROY BITTAN & LUCINDA WILLIAMS

1. Right In Time
2. Car Wheels On A Gravel Road
3. 2 Kool 2 Be 4-Gotten
4. Drunken Angel
5. Concrete And Barbed Wire
6. Lake Charles
7. Can't Let Go
8. I Lost It
9. Metal Firecracker
10. Greenville
11. Still I Long For Your Kiss
12. Joy
13. Jackson

In 1998, Lucinda Williams was still a legend: elusive, slow recording, non prolific, beautiful, and a well of amazing music. After Car Wheels, she became more public and more prolific...and her product has never been the same. But there will always be Car Wheels. A simply stunning album of ridiculously great songs and performances, Williams became one of the best things about alt country. Every track is worthy of praise, and each one is loaded with hooks and emotion.

The guest list is impressive as well: Steve Earle (who said it was the worst recording experience of his life), Emmylou Harris, Buddy Miller, and Bruce Springsteen keyboardist Roy Bittan are here. This is a must have album: one of the best of the 90's, and one of the most heartfelt records ever made.

Elv1s: 30 #1 Hits by Elvis Presley

ELVIS PRESLEY
30 #1 HITS
2002-RCA
Produced By DAVID BENDETH

1. Heartbreak Hotel
2. Don't Be Cruel
3. Hound Dog
4. Love Me Tender
5. Too Much
6. All Shook Up
7. (Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear
8. Jailhouse Rock
9. Don't
10. Hard Headed Woman
11. One Night
12. (Now And Then There's) A Fool Such As I
13. A Big Hunk O' Love
14. Stuck On You
15. It's Now Or Never
16. Are You Lonesome Tonight?
17. Wooden Heart
18. Surrender
19. (Marie's The Name) His Latest Flame
20. Can't Help Falling In Love
21. Good Luck Charm
22. She's Not you
23. Return To Sender
24. (You're The) Devil In Disguise
25. Crying In The Chapel
26. In The Ghetto
27. Suspicious Minds
28. The Wonder Of You
29. Burning Love
30. Way Down
31. A Little Less Conversation (JXL Radio Edit Remix)

What to say? A collection of #1 hits from Elvis. It can't be bad. You may already have all of these songs, and if you do, this is pretty moot except for the last track, which was new in 2002. But this is why Elvis is so loved: his hits were bigger than life. And every track here is just that: bigger than life.

The collection itself is nice with cool pictures and excellent (yet short) liner notes for each song. Pretty much a perfect hits collection: and how many artists can honestly say that they have 30 of them? It's just scratching the surface with The King...
