i'm looking at my 2019 list, and even after listening to roughly 700 albums released this year, i can't help but feel like my age is showing. i mean, look at this (in alphabetical order):

    black midi: schlagenheim [alternative rock]
    caroline shaw: orange [string quartet]
dolphin midwives: liminal garden [avant garde]
    holly herndon: proto [art pop]
    linda oh: aventurine [chamber jazz]
maria chiara argiro: hidden seas [contemporary jazz]
susanna & the brotherhood of our lady: garden of earthly delights [art pop]
    thom yorke: anima [ambient pop]
    yeule: serotonin ii [ambient pop]
    yikii: flower's grave [ethereal wave]

this is an old man's list, isn't it? don't get me wrong - i legitimately love these albums. absolutely love them. but looking at those genre tags... i have to think that the sixteen-year-old in me is more than a little bit disappointed in me. i can hear him asking, "right, but where's all the fun music?" i mean, it's right there, kid. fun... changes, i guess.

dear diary,

this new year, i will finish something. i will not look back on 2020 in hindsight and say, "was that pun really necessary? oh, i didn't finish anything (again)."

unfinished projects what qualify:

as the amish rage [ep, paintings]
beneath the raging sea [album, art show, film, poems]
the boy who lived upside down [children's book]
daddy, take me to the zoo [children's book]
    drawn out [album/ep]
    everwake [graphic novel]
a part of my heart (apart from my head) [album]
ukrainian goats [film] < definitely not happening
untitled [novel] < definitely not happening

get your monkeys off of my back
bats go apeshit; i've gone off the tracks
can we turn back
get your marbles out my head
everybody thinks that i've gone mad
but i'll turn back
keep your loonies out of my life
i still close my eyes and see your eyes
can't you turn back
ease these marbles off my mind
toys in attics, panicky attacks
now, i've gone back
cause i can't lift you up
from the jaws of hell nor sharkmouth
dogs will tear you limb from limb
now your blood is on my sleeves

i'd forgotttt/n haugh much i love(d) pearl jam. ten and vs. are incredible.
maybe a little downhill from there, but they haven't really released any "bad" music.

i think that over the years, i've developed such a disdain for some of their peers (e.g. nirvana, soundgarden, stone temple pilots, collective soul, et al) and some of their followers (e.g. tonic, creed, nickelback, matchbox 20, et al) that some of that distaste carried over.
but after a bit of a jeff buckley binge, i felt the need to revistt the pearls, and they were such a great band...
and besides that, i think some of their peers were legitimately pretty great too (alice in chains, early live, heck - jeff buckley, radiohead) as well as a few of their followers (silverchair - fight me, brand new, modest mouse, et al).

i used to get hot and bothered when ppl'd say, "your voice reminds me of eddie vedder", and maybe it's cause i haven't heard that in some time, but i've realized that was probably meant as a compliment and not a, "you remind me of scott stapp the way you imitate the eddie".

                                                    so there's that...

and heck, anything beats the time someone commented on how much i reminded them of rob thomas.
