a bee-striped actress
watermelon under dress
stars shuffle cross the scene
like spotlights on a silver screen
grass stains and soiled nails
a girl with a pretty smile
she drives pink, and I can’t hitch a ride
but I’ve got her hand in mine
didn’t I know about the stitches

closed closets, whispered words
two tapes and two tales
one requited, one deflowered
little boys are monsters
we play hide and seek
and jump off the red bricks
listen to the keys drop
as the fangs sink into flesh
didn’t I know about the stitches

we realize in one moment
our brittle love afloat
not but on naivety
hurtled towards total erosion
of boundaries uninvested
was it your pull or my push
that led us to the rocks
or did we fall head-first
into shark-infested waters
with no consequence in sight
on the dim light of false hope

the center of the universe holds the unit's power
somebody hides time, and bruises mark the hours

someone digs the graves while the rest disrobe
reinvent the wheel; circumnavigate the globe

he retiles his own gambrel, but the roof caves in
beats the horses pulling chariot with the rolling pin

the sugar in the water's dissolved; it's the futurity
but someone on a roll holds the keys to the city

the overall atmosphere of this album is quite nice. something akin to dusty surrealism. something enchanting about it... my tape deck has a change speed feature that was fun to goof around with on this record. gave everything an off-kilter boards of canada vibe. the lyrics are pretty abstract. not dissociatively so though. there's simply no clear picture of what's being sung or said, but there's a general sense of loss and grief that hits like a ton of bricks. quite a pleasant record.

track 02: bribes under the table
track 03: to lose the hand that feeds
track 04: give up the dream
track 05: inside, outside
track 06: chalk it up

track 08: difficulty value
track 09: psych out on the runway
track 10: the death of ten
track 11: parallels
track 12: run, run, run

it took three or four listens to figure out what any of this nonsense is about. it's not subtle, but it's too controlled to call any of it chaos. the lyrics and song titles are rather athletic and acrobatic. a lot of references to things spinning, getting turned upside down, rolling around, flipping over, etc., and the musicians are up to the task. their athleticism is on full display, particularly the two guitars, which weave in-and-out of each other's delicate webs and riffs in hypnotic fashion. a lot of chord inversions. a lot of reversed effects. a couple abrupt changes in time signatures and syncopation that mostly work quite well. the highlight here, and perhaps the only song i'd give a ten, is the death of ten, which features a raucous, destructive trumpet solo as the time signature goes from 4/4 to 7/8 to 3/4 in this three-part medley of absurdity.

artist: mossrue
album: under the eves of our fathers

track 01: blossom
track 02: a part of my heart apart from my head
track 03: in my heart
track 04: the cattle graze
track 05: will i ever find it?
track 06: tale chase
track 07: laricis
track 08: groping for clarity
track 09: your girlfriend doesn't know who you are
track 10: your bees in my wax
track 11: two leaves
track 12: tell her not to cry

album rating: 9/10

some say it's too derivative, and that may be true, but whatever credibility it loses in derivation is more than made up for in the album's variety. you could convince me that the jazzy, piano-centric numbers on the album, particularly blossom, will i ever find it?, and tell her not to cry were all lifted off nina simone records, and i'd believe you. at the same time, there's the incredible run of morrissey-inspired tracks groping for clarity, your girlfriend doesn't know who you are, and your bees in my wax replete with witty lyricism, crooner charm, and jangly guitars. pair those attributes with the bluesier rock of songs like the cattle graze and tale chase or the classical stylings of laricis and two leaves, and this may be one of my favorite records of all time.

artist: cecily eanora
album: to believe in a forever

track 01: your love
track 02: the light turns
track 03: lost
track 04: my love
track 05: the search
track 06: i had a lover
track 07: our love
track 08: a honeymoon thrill
track 09: the moon

album rating: 6/10

what i appreciate here is the conviction. i've said it before, and i'll say it again: there's nothing more appealing to me artistically than conviction - lyrically, musically, what have you. there's a hopeless romantic behind the songs on this album that refuses to take the cynical low road, and there's a deep sense of faith behind every word of longing, every breath of lament, every fit of joy. i'm not quite as sold on the technicality, as there's nothing particularly inspiring here, but it's a good album. i look forward to hearing eanora's next project.

artist: bastien beluga & the ampersands
album: ...and then add sum

track 01: ko-ko
track 02: spring blossoms
track 03: the back of my burner
track 04: summertime
track 05: feeling good
track 06: on the tip of my tongue
track 07: lost your laughter

album rating: 8/10

this is a solid jazz album. free, wild, and fresh. the standards are reinterpreted with pizazz, and the original tracks stack up against them pretty well. i'm already looking forward to repeat listens. the only bone i have to pick with this record is that even with a runtime of 39:43, the record really breezes by. perhaps that's in part due the rumors that bastien and co. left three tracks left on the threshing floor. in any event, these cats are fun. i hope they continue working together.
