Not as bad as Nevermind, some good songs here and interesting sounding noise rock and post-hardcore influenced tunes mixed in with the poppy stuff. Cobain's lyrics are still pretentious intellect-wannabe bullshit though.

This was my favorite Nirvana in high school. I still love some of these tracks, especially "Serve the Servants", but it falls a bit flat now. Nevermind was much more lasting for me.

I don't understand this at all. Whatever's abstract he pretty much explicitly stated was nonsense, and whatever is concrete is pretty fucking concrete Eh?

My favorite Nirvana album, although Rape Me is one of the dullest songs ever recorded. The 2013 Albini mix is a gem.

I've always seen Cobain's lyrics as being very stream-of-consciousness. They're more about making sounds and images that fit the music than telling a story or expressing complex ideas. They fit very well with the overall cathartic quality of Nirvana's music, IMO. The lyrics on In Utero are especially dark, which may be part of why I related to it more as a teen than I do now...
