Possibly the greatest album to have come out of the "Britpop" days. That and "Coming Up". I never cared much about Oasis, and Blur's greatest and most consistent records came later, when Britpop was just a memory.

Jarvis Cocker's wit in describing Britain is even more meaningful than that of Damon Albarn's. "Common People" will never get old, it seems.

Track picks:

1. Mis-Shapes
3. Common People
5. Disco 2000
8. Sorted For E's & Wizz
10. Underwear

I used to think "Pencil Skirt" was sexy in early high school, but now I think this whole album is just wrong.

What exactly makes it wrong?

I dunno, the cheesy creepy fade-in could be a big part of it. But this whole album just sounds like your creepy uncle who's stuck in the past.

(And of course, Britpop in general is really easy to hate on, since it's among the very whitest music of the whole nineties. This is Hardcore is decent, though, and has a really great cover. And I haven't listened to either since high school, and they now have a really chalky taste in my mouth).

Do you harbor a lot of white guilt?

yes. shouldn't we all?

Seriously, though, most Britpop music has aged so poorly. They have these weak guitars, weak synths, and they just feel so overproduced. You could say the same about post-grunge like Nickelback, but at least they have a fairly unpretentious demeanor. These kids literally thought they were the resurrection. I like Parklife, but even that is strongly hurt by this aesthetic.

No. We're not all responsible for the actions of our race or its past. Using race as a criticism of music or art is pretty racist, even if it's in the self-loathing sense. Is it too white because it's music that only white people can identify with?

In all seriousness, my distaste for Britpop has little to do with race. It's just that most of it sounds appalling to me. Once again, weak guitars, weak synths, weak choruses, delusions of grandeur.
