Moraes Moreira (singar/guitarist of Novos Baianos) has passed away. He also had a whole bunch of solo records, but his work with Novos Baianos produced at least three really fantastic albums. I think Acabou Chorare is pretty well regarded on BEA, especially for a non-English album. Personal fav too. Think I'll give it a spin tomorrow.

Acabou Chorare is transcendent (my current #6), and Novos Baianos F.C. is great. I've only heard those two. What's your third favorite - self-titled? _________________ Add me on RYM
He always professed a deep admiration for Alan Vega, whom he worked with on several occasions, and even pre-figured Vega's repetitive punkish rockabilly style, on this beautiful occasion:
Some great improvisers all just from this week or so: Richard Teitelbaum, synths for Braxton, Lewis, Jenkins, Crispell, et al.; Lee Konitz, saxophonist for Lennie Tristano; Giuseppe Logan, contemporary and label mate of Ayler; and Henry Grimes, bassist for Ayler, Taylor, et al. Not exactly unexpected, but Teitelbaum was still making music, contributing to Crispell's very good Dream Libretto from a couple years ago.
Losing Konitz, Giuseppe Logan and Henry Grimes within 48 hours is surreal. I swear there was a day not too long ago (mid-2019) where I listened to an album by each of them in the same day.
Fantastic musicians. Heavy rec on this if you haven't heard it:
RIP Tony Allen. This one kinda hit me... absolute legend. Truly one of the best ever. I've probably heard this guy on 50+ albums and not a single one is bad. Afrobeat's sound owes just as much if not more to Tony Allen than Fela Kuti. Without Tony Allen, the genre might not even exist (certainly not the groove). One of my favourite drummers of all time, easy. To lose Allen, Ginger Baker and Manu Dibango so close together is surreal.
His album last month with the late Masekela is well worth a listen. Hoping people give it a shot. Even at their age they were still both in the top 1% of the game. Sad to see both of them gone.

Yeah. This one cuts deep. He was still making great music. To lose Dibango and Allen in the past month or so is such a blow to afrobeat. _________________ http://jonnyleather.com
